Dennis Ishol Obituary

Dennis Ray Ishol was born on November 2, 1941, in Hettinger, North Dakota, to Oscar and Vera Ishol (Mannerud). He passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Dennis was a storyteller at heart, and while we may not know every date or detail, what truly matters is the time we spent listening to his stories and the memories we hold dear. His life was rich with experiences that shaped the man we loved. As a child, Dennis moved with his family to Sinai, South Dakota, where he attended school. At just 17, he joined the U.S. Navy-a decision he often credited with setting him on the right path. After four years of active duty, he pursued a degree in education at General Beadle State College (now Dakota State University). A lifelong learner, Dennis was also a Fulbright Scholar and spent time in Germany-an experience he cherished. In November 1965, Dennis married Joan Friedrich, and together they welcomed twin daughters in 1969. He began his career as a high school teacher, sharing his passion for German, Social Studies, and Civics. His professional journey later included roles as a Navy recruiter, work with the VA and Department of Labor, and as a Driver's Ed instructor, where he taught hundreds of students. He continued his service in the Navy Reserves, ultimately dedicating 41 years to his country. Of all his roles, Dennis most loved being "Opa" to his five grandchildren: Trey, Carter, Tessa, Cole, and Addison. Whether cheering from the bleachers at music concerts, basketball games, cross-country meets, or cheer and dance competitions, he was their biggest fan. He also enjoyed sharing pictures of Carter's latest fishing adventures and talking hunting and firearms with his sons-in-law. Dennis is survived by his daughters Sonja Borchardt (Dean) of Brandon, SD, and Tanja Pederson (Andy) of Sioux Falls, SD; and his grandchildren Trey Pederson, Carter Borchardt, Tessa Pederson, Cole Borchardt, and Addison Borchardt. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dale Ishol and Don Ishol. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the family, who will contribute the funds to Educator's Rising in South Dakota, an organization whose mission is to inspire and grow current and rising educators. A Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 5-7 PM at Heritage Funeral Home. To send a flower arrangement in memory of Dennis Ray Ishol, please click here to visit our sympathy store.

We lived for our Dell Rapids kids.
Those kids got us introduced to some fine parents/people.
Denny was one of those.

So sorry to hear of Dennis' passing. He was my German teacher at Dell Rapids. I loved his class. May God wrap his loving arms around you and give you comfort.

I will forever miss my “Uncle Lushwell”. Denny was one of the funniest and kindest men I’ve ever known. In addition to being one of my dad’s best friends, he helped me land a job at Sioux Valley Hospital and taught my oldest daughter how to drive. His smile and laugh will always be how I remember him. Wishing for comforting thoughts for all family and friends.

Sonja and Tanya and your entire family have our deepest sympathy.
What a wonderful man. We had many fun times, although sometimes we may have made some less than wise choices!! No matter what we were doing, our last conversation of the day ALWAYS came down to our kids and their families. VERY PROUD MAN.
Bless you all

I have so many fond memories of your dad while growing up! He was not only an amazing father to you both, but also one of the best teachers, so many memories in his German classes. I feel grateful to have known him. Sending love and strength to the entire family during this difficult time. Love you!
