Dan became a wonderful and unique friend of mine. I say unique because we are over 40 years apart from each other in age! I befriended Dan while in my sophomore year of college at the University of Tennessee in the late Fall of 2008 while in a church service at Redeemer Presbyterian.
There I was, listening to songs and to the church service when Dan sat down next to me. We chatted. We share stories. And I quickly decided that I wanted to keep up with this easy to talk to ex hippy from Knoxville. So we exchanged phone information and kept up from there on.
Because Dan lived in the Fort (the neighborhood that the church was in and that the university is next to) I was able to see Dan often: walking around, riding his bike, making friends with locals, and always trying help someone laugh.
I quickly realized after taking Dan out for coffee and meals that he loved giving gifts to people. He even gave me either gifts he had made (because he used to do some carpentry work) or things he had found that he thought I´d enjoy (an old Bible or an old painting). It truly amazed me how thoughtful and kind he was to us all.
Over the years Dan got to know many of my friends in college and at church and became a beloved staple in our community. There was even a time that Dan needed to get a minor surgery that would require him to rest up for about a week and my roommates agreed that Dan was staying with us. It was an honor to open up our dinky college home to Dan.
Dan and I spent many hours talking about our families, our hopes and dreams, our struggles, and our need for and belief in the saving life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I cherish these conversations to this day.
The last time I saw Dan was in the summer of 2011 just before I left Knoxville after my graduation. The last time we spoke on the phone I believe was a few years before Dan passed away.
I´m writing this because even to this day, Dan comes to my mind. I loved him dearly and am so grateful to have spent so many hours of life, laughter, and faith.
I pray that the Lord Jesus will give me the honor of seeing Dan again-renewed, healthy, happy, and always prepared to make us laugh once more as he did so many times before.
With deepest love,

Although I haven’t seen Dan in many years, I have always had a special place in my heart for him and the Hall family. I am saddened by his passing and hold his family in love and prayer. May Dan rest in peace and rise in glory.

I am sorry to say that I haven't seen Dan in maybe thirty years or longer. We had many great times together as graduates of Bearden together in 1968. We played on the Bearden basketball team together and have many memories of those good times. I am sorry for the loss of Dan, and I am sorry that we were not connected much since high school. God Bless your family during this time of mourning and remembering.

This a beautiful tribute obviously written by ones who knew and loved Dan well. I knew Dan when I was younger and was touched by his kindness to me even though I was only his little sister's friend. I am not surprised he grew up to be a giving man with a servants heart. I know he will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. My love, thoughts and prayers are with all who loved him. May Dan Rest in Peace.

I remember Dan as a gentle soul even in high school. Very sorry to read about his death.
