Evelyn Herman Dreyfuss

Evelyn Herman Dreyfuss died January 21, 2025, at the age of 96. Born in the Bronx on March 2, 1928, she moved with her parents, Miriam and Isidore Herman, and brother, Larry, to Los Angeles in 1943. Evelyn graduated from Dorsey High School, and earned her bachelor's degree from UCLA. She worked briefly as a social worker and secretary before marrying an attorney, Gilbert Dreyfuss, in 1953. She raised her family of three children and assorted animals in Cheviot Hills, where she lived until 2004. Evelyn was a spirited president of the Sinai Temple Sisterhood and the Women's Conference of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles. She was extremely active in the movement to free Soviet Jews before the collapse of the USSR, traveling to Russia to meet with the Refusenik community. She was a talented painter and calligrapher, was known for her extraordinary needlepoint and knitted creations, was an avid reader, dear friend, and lovely person. Whether you dropped by her home as a friend or repairman, you were offered a sit-down lunch and never left hungry. Evelyn was a patron of all the arts in Los Angeles, bringing her children and grandchildren to museums and wide-flung cultural events. She was a devoted mother and energetic grandma, and she stayed young, vibrant, and good-humored throughout her very long life. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gilbert, and son, Lee, and is survived by her children, Randy and Melanie, her daughters-in-law, Pamela and Kellie, and her three grandchildren, Raphael, Sia, and Lexie. Her loving and gracious presence will always be missed. Her funeral will take place Monday, January 27, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.
