CARL RADKE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 22 to Feb. 23, 2017.
RADKE
CARL F.
Age 87, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017, with his wife by his side. Previously from Upper St. Clair, he was a resident of Country Meadows in Bridgeville. Carl was a devoted husband of 65 years to Lillian P. "Pat" Radke. He was the loving father of Richard (Sandra), Jack (Terri), William (Sharon), Kurt and Patricia Martin (Brian). He was the beloved grandfather of Curtis (Rachel), Chris (Emily), Carl, Taryn, Alex, Hannah, Stephen, Dirk, Ian, Bryce and the late Lily. He is also survived by his great- grandchildren Asher, Vera and Isaac. Born in Forest Park, Illinois, Carl was the only son of Carl and Ella Radke. Carl met his future wife Pat in high school where he was a member of the football and basketball teams as well as the marching band. He graduated from the University of Illinois, got married and enlisted in the Marines. He served in Korea during the Korean War and reached the rank of Captain. Upon leaving the military, he began a 37 year career with the U.S. Steel Corporation in the accounting and tax functions. In his retirement, he provided volunteer tax assistance which led him to a second part-time career with the IRS. Carl enjoyed playing paddle tennis and was an avid reader with frequent visits to the Upper St. Clair Library. He and Pat were longtime members of Ruthfred Lutheran Church in Bethel Park. Carl and Pat shared a love of singing and were members of the Mendelssohn Choir together. Carl was well-known at his church for his solos. Carl's wife, five children and grandchildren meant everything to him, and he spent many days watching whatever activities in which they were involved. Family and friends will be received Friday, February 24, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at BEINHAUER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray PA 15317. A funeral service will be held at Ruthfred Lutheran Church in Bethel Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Everyone please meet at church. A private burial with military honors will take place on Monday, February 27, 2017, in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. I was grateful for the opportunity to see Pat, Rich, Bill, Jack and Kurt today, to revive memories about Carl and all of you. But it occurred to me afterwards that somehow the famous carpool escaped mention. For years, I mostly drove Ben Dowding, Bill McArdle, and Carl to work and back, through snowstorms and horrific traffic (except when I was somewhere else in the world). We parked in the basement of he US Steel building. All kept up a great conversation full of wit and comradery. I know he was a great family man, but there may have been whole weeks that Carl spent more time with me than he did with one of you. Lang Krayer

Many great memories of time spent with the Radke family. What I remember the most is the powerful force of love Mr. Radke showed for all of his children and their friends. Rest in peace Mr. Radke.
