Caroline ROE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2021.
ROE, Caroline Medora (nee SALE) Suddenly on November 7, 2021 at age 84. Medora leaves behind devoted husband of 51 years Harry Roe, loving daughter Anne Roe (Denise Bruno), sister Barbara Schon (Robert) and brother Charles Sale (Margaret). Predeceased by brother Robert Sale (Cindy). After receiving a PhD in Medieval Studies at University of Toronto in the early 1970s, Medora taught English for many years at Branksome Hall. She launched a second career in writing in her forties, publishing 7 mystery novels under the name Medora Sale, and 8 mysteries under the name Caroline Roe. She was awarded the Arthur Ellis First Novel Award in 1986 for Murder on the Run and the Barry Award for Best Paperback Original Mystery Novel in 1999 for An Antidote for Avarice. Her passion for writing extended to supporting fellow writers, leading her to serve as president of both Crime Writers of Canada (1989-90) and Sisters in Crime (1998-99). Medora was fiercely committed to following her dreams and supporting other women and girls to do the same. She was also a kind and gentle person who was passionate about animals and music. We miss her immensely. The family will arrange a small service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Nellie's shelter would be appreciated.

To Anne and Family,

I am sending sympathy as you remember your amazing Mum.

I will remember her always and can't fully quantify the impact her teaching had on me. After Branksome, with her encouragement, I pursued English Lit at McGill and Journaliam at Carleton, followed by a career in communications and fundraising; my writing skills, finely nurtured by Ms Roe, have always been a strength. I adored her classes; her smile, the twinkle in her eye and gentle encouragement lifted me and made me feel worthy.

May she rest in peace, knowing she left a lasting impression in the hearts and minds of so many young women.

This is a continuation of the initial message - somehow Jackie Shaver's name was omitted - and she is the best person in this collective of Dodie's Branksome pals. We have all been thinking of Dodie.

I am writing on behalf of her friends and colleagues from Branksome to say how sad it is that the world has lost her. - from Diane (Dina), Kathy Proctor, Annice Blake and Katy Waugh. She was a generous and intuitive friend.
Her former students have been in touch with each other and me to talk about that amazing Grade 13 course she developed. They seem to remember every single thing she said to them, whether relevant to the course content or to the stuff of life.
