David Hyslop Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 3 to Mar. 5, 2019.
David was born to Cynthia Yarrow and Thomas Hyslop in Hamilton, Ontario. A passionate historian, he graduated from McGill University in 1967. Following university, he pursued an interest in finance, chalking the board at Vancouver's early stock exchange before becoming a banker.

Growing up in Qualicum, it was not long before the ocean called, causing David to hang up his suit and tie for a short career in commercial fishing onboard his first troller, Key West, followed by the Commanchero II. At this point, family duties called and David took a keen interest in managing, overseeing and successfully steering the family business in downtown Victoria.

Although business was always an interest of David's, his true passions lay outside his work. David grew up an avid hunter and angler. His lasting legacy will be through his work with Ducks Unlimited and as a Director of the Pacific Salmon Foundation to preserve critical habitat for fish and waterfowl. David also loved to spend his days cooking, gardening, storytelling and entertaining. Whether it was hosting friends and family at his farm in Cowichan Bay, or later at his fishing hideout in Trevelin, Argentina, guests were always welcome.

David is predeceased by his parents and sister, Jillian, and survived by his stepmother, Fiona, his brothers, Peter, Chris, Mark and Alexander, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Squeaky.

A special thank you to David's bridge group who kept his mind sharp and provided him with great friendship right through to his final days.

There will be a Celebration of LIFE at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 2:00 pm.

I went to university in Montreal with David. Then joined him as an honourary deckhand on the Comanchero II. A great guy and missed.

I had only moved into the Yarrow Building a couple of days earlier in 1993 when a kind gentleman walked into my store and said "Hi. My name is David and I own the building. Welcome!" I found out his office was 2 doors down. I got to know him through his drop in visits (with stories) over the next 26 years, at a couple of music events I invited him to, and through his going to bat for me when I needed an advocate during lease negotiations with the property manager. His health had taken an obvious change in direction when he dropped in recently and that, sadly, was the last time I saw him. You were very helpful and fair to me David and I will never forget you. My deepest condolences to Peter and Stephanie and all of David's family. I will miss his visits, his stories, his wit, and his smile. God Bless.

I had some great words but they didn't get printed. All about adventures with David. Well thought out , a perfect forager, wonderful food stories and awful jokes!! I can still remember the jokes and the make me cry overtime. You were a wonderful friend and a man like few other. Much love and respect to you/

David's life long sense of fun, curiosity and anything for an adventure were legendary. Combined with his intellect, capable food foraging, be it in, on, under or above the ground made no difference. Nor did the sea! I cannot think of another man who held so much so generously. And the jokes! I cried every time!
with love to you David and many fond memories.xox

I am deeply saddened to hear of David's passing. I will always be grateful for the adventures we shared in our early lives together. We remained friends and from time to time shared dinner or lunch together just to check in and ensure each was doing well. After my move to Mexico we lost touch which makes it doubly hard to hear of his passing. Please accept my deepest condolences ...sincerely Daphne Peerless

My partner for many years on myriad fishing expeditions and shooting trips both on the Island and on the Prairies.

Sad to see him leave so early.
