Dinty MOORE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Dec. 21 to Dec. 22, 2013.
MOORE, Dinty
1921 - 2013
After living a rich life of joy and wonder, William Alastair Moore died peacefully on the morning of December 16, 2013. Dinty was the sixth of seven children born to Montague Moore and Ethel Hutchings at Deer Lake in Burnaby. Growing up on a working farm, he was instilled with a strong work ethic, and a desire to help his neighbours and family. He had a great love and appreciation of nature and forever treasured Deer Lake. After marrying the love of his life, Joan Sievenpiper, in 1946, they settled on the south shore of the lake, raising four daughters. This didn't deter Dinty from including his girls in everything he did, or from teaching them everything he knew. Hiking, camping, canoeing, swimming, fishing, and carpentry were a part of life, along with a good dose of moxie. When grandchildren came along, he continued to share his love of the great outdoors. A founding member of the Dogwood Canoe Club, Dinty worked tirelessly to promote recreational canoeing and water safety throughout B.C. Through Moore Sales, he inspired and sponsored many on their canoeing adventures, and developed a worldwide network of friends who enjoyed the lakes and rivers as much as he did. Dinty loved the challenge of a good set of rapids on a fast river and paddled the Bowron Lakes many times. Dinty had a passion and skill for inventions and woodworking; his workshop was a special place for him. He generously gave his creations to family, friends, and neighbours. In his later years Dinty used his talents to design innovative solutions for clients at the Arthritis Society. Predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Dinty was the last of his family, living to the age of 92. Left to cherish his memories, knowledge, compassion and generosity are his four daughters, Lin, Tish, Kathy, and Anne, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all. The Moore family wishes to thank everyone who kindly helped and supported their father in his final years. A private celebration for family and friends will be held in the new year.

Just heard from my brother Roy, who went to BCIT with Kathy about this great loss! What a great man, sold me my first canoe, a 1960 Chestnut Prospector, ordered it right from factory in N B! We paddled many miles together with the Chestnut a Canoe Club! I still love my old Canoe! What a wonderful life Dinty enjoyed! Condolences to all his loved ones! I probably have some old slides of those outings! 250-449-2739. [email protected]

To the Moore family,
What great memories I have of Dinty. We met back in 1963 when I bought my Seagull outboard motor from his store on Kingsway. To be followed the next year by a V stern Chestnut canoe. That year was the beginning of the Dogwood Canoe Club, one of Dinty's inspirations. Many adventures and years later we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his Club. We will miss you at this gathering.
Sincere condolences.

My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time. I remember Dinty with great fondness as I worked at the Arthritis society ( director of physio). Dinty was a true gentleman, great creator, and such a strong source of caring for all the staff and patients. I enjoyed spending time with him when he designed his many creations. He will be remembered always.

Thanks Dinty for the memories, the many canoeing trips, and being the person that you were, and having the family that I remember.
