Dora Summerour Freeman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on July 27, 2025 at the age of 93. Born on June 9, 1932, she was married for 54 years to her husband Sam W. Freeman Jr. until his death in 2009. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, and community. Residents of Roswell for more than 50 years, they were pillars of First Baptist Roswell. Dora taught the ladies Sunday School Friendship class for decades, and served on numerous committees and as a deacon. Her faithful presence, selfless service, and unwavering support touched the lives of the church ministers and staff, as well as fellow members. A life long educator, Dora was a graduate of both Bessie Tift College and Georgia State University. She spent her professional years teaching at schools in Newnan (GA), Anniston (AL), Owensboro (KY), and Daytona Beach (FL) before moving to Roswell. There she taught math at North Roswell Elementary and Crabapple Middle schools to many Roswell children. She enjoyed keeping in contact with both her students and colleagues in her retirement years. Dora was preceded in death by her husband Sam Jr., her mother Irma Cochran Locke, and her brother Thomas Jefferson Summerour. She is survived by her children Samuel Walker Freeman, III (Lisa Holmes, fiancé) of Woodstock, Carol Freeman Ake (Tim) of Woodstock and Bob Freeman (Grace) of Dunwoody as well as her siblings Jimmy Locke (Sue), Ellen Lovvorn (Harry), and Judy Hartley (Harold). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren Lauren Freeman Whittaker (Pace), Stephen Ake (Emily), Colin Ake (Nikki), Samuel Walker Freeman IV (Emily), Bryan Ake (Toni), James Freeman, Melissa Ake (Robert Henry), Beth Anne Ake Teal (John-Michael), Powell Freeman (Kathryn), Amanda Ake Besserman (Brad), and Lewis Freeman. In addition, she is survived by 11 great-grandchildren Merritt and Lilah Whittaker, Jonathan Ake, Owen, Lealynn, and Hudson Ake, Samuel Walker Freeman V, Calvin and Kelsey Ake, Lucas Henry, and Edward Teal. She dearly loved them all. We would like to express our thanks for the church family of First Baptist Roswell who has provided a caring community for decades, especially in recent years. Also, our family is grateful for Judy, Anne, Sheri, and Maggie who have offered comfort and care to Mom in her last 3 1/2 years. Graveside services will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Georgia at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 2, 2025, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-8:00 pm on Friday, August 1, at Northside Chapel in Roswell, Georgia. In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts be given in her memory to First Baptist Roswell, 710 Mimosa Boulevard, Roswell, GA 30075.

Dora was a wonderful lady. She was so supportive and encouraging to me when I served on the staff at First Baptist of Roswell. I pray that all the special memories with her will bring peace and comfort to all of her family during the coming days.
