FITCHBURG -- Edward F. Gokey, Jr., 78, of Fitchburg, died Wednesday, September 11, 2013, after a courageous four year battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

Edward was born December 12, 1934 to Edward F and Valeda (Dionne) Gokey in Fitchburg, MA. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1952.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, which he proudly served from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1963.

He worked in the bus transportation industry all of his adult life. He began his career with Turner Motor Coach before starting his own business, Gokey & Quinn Bus Company, Inc., in 1969 where he worked until his retirement in 2009.

He worked hard all of his life, passing on his knowledge and work ethic to all of his children, until health problems forced him to retire.

He leaves behind his wife of

27 years, Sharon (Smith); his children, Pamela Fenton (Robert), Gary Gokey (Denise), Ronald Walsh (Barb), Dennis Walsh, Jessica Stark (Todd) and Kristy Gokey;

17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both parents, his infant daughter, Cynthia, and his son, Edward (Butchie).

His family wishes to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who took such great care of him during the past four years.

GOKEY -- The funeral will be held on Monday, Sept. 16, from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd, Fitchburg with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Bernard's Parish at St. Camillus de lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 2 to 4 P.M.
