Gail Ekstrand

Gail Ellen Ekstrand, Ed.D., 83, formerly of Lititz, Lancaster County, died March 22nd at Freedom Village in West Brandywine, Chester County, where she resided, after a brief illness.

A 1962 graduate of Moravian University, she dedicated her life to educating children. Dr. Ekstrand began her career as a classroom teacher, working in Allentown, Reading, Philadelphia, and Muhlenberg school districts. She served as a Reading Specialist in the Muhlenberg School District, before becoming a principal in 1982. She received her doctorate from Temple University in 1980. Dr. Ekstrand spent over a decade as a principal and curriculum developer in the Warwick School district, before retiring in 1998.

Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Sabina Ekstrand (née Cregier) and Sture O. Ekstrand.

During her nearly 40-year career, she worked with thousands of young students, advocating for educational equity and inclusivity. In retirement, Dr. Ekstrand travelled extensively around the world. She also volunteered in the Warwick and Coatesville schools districts, and she was Treasurer of the Outreach Committee and Scholarship Fund at Freedom Village retirement community.

She is survived by her loving sister, Mrs. Mariann Ekstrand Shirk (Stephen), of Glen Mills. She is also survived by her adoring nieces, Mrs. Stephanie DiFelice Heavens (David) of Chester Springs, Dr. Catherine DiFelice Box (Jean-Baptiste) of Bala Cynwyd, grand-nieces Madelyn & Océane, and grand-nephews Nicholas & Samuel.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on May 9th at Freedom Village retirement community.
