Harold Young Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4, 2023.
Harold Allan Young Jr, loving brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and global financial executive died on September 9, 2023 after a brief illness.

Born September 29, 1951, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Harold was the first-born of Rev. Harold Allan Young and Margaret Davis Young. He spent his early childhood years in Evanston, Illinois moving to New York City in 1962 when his father joined the ministry at the historic St Philips Episcopal Church in Harlem. Harold was raised "in the church" where he was an acolyte and choir member. Always a superlative student, Harold attended public schools including the acclaimed Bronx High School of Science where he graduated in 1969. At an early age, he developed a love of music, especially jazz, playing clarinet in his school and borough-wide student bands. Harold received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Union College in Schenectady NY in 1973 where he was a member of Union's Lacrosse team. Lacrosse was a lifelong love. Harold spent his high school and college summers working at Camp DeWolfe in Long Island New York, a summer camp sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese.

Upon graduating from Union College, Harold moved to Boston to pursue a master's in communications from Boston University. Harold saw the contentious struggle for desegregating Boston schools which prompted him to leave his studies and to work for a community organization dedicated to gaining an equitable education for all Bostonians. Harold then returned to New York City to embark upon an extraordinarily successful career as a global thought leader in cash management services. His career culminated with his appointment as Managing Director and Global Head of High Value Payments for Deutsche Bank's Global Cash Management unit where he oversaw the banks offerings and successfully integrated these services with other products targeted to financial institutions and corporate clients. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank in 2003, Harold had over twenty years of product management experience as Global Head of Liquidity Management at Citibank and, prior to that, 10 years at Bankers Trust Company. Harold retired from banking and consulting in 2019. Throughout decades of global travel, Harold remained a diehard New York city dweller until 2002, when he moved to New Rochelle, New York. For years while living in the New York area, he dedicated time and resources providing food and meals to those less fortunate. Harold had a very generous heart.

Harold was not only an avid jazz fan, but a music fan in general, loving James Brown and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few. He was also a rabid sports fan, loving the Dallas Cowboys, New York Knicks, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, and Manchester United. He was an avid cyclist, basketball and tennis player, and enjoyed fishing.

Harold is survived by two siblings: Edgar Young and wife LoriBeth of Waterbury, Connecticut and Margaret Young-Hurst and husband Peter Hurst of Palmetto, Florida. Harold was predeceased by his brother, Harvey Young and nephew Brian Young of St Louis Missouri. Harold is also survived by his niece and goddaughter, Pearl Elisabeth Young of Malden, Massachusetts, nephew Jason Young and wife, Kelley of Mundelein, Illinois; great nephews and nieces include Natalie Young of Memphis, Tennessee, Charlotte and Logan Young of Mundelein, Illinois and Dominic Young and mother Kristen Toumey of St Louis, MO. Harold is also survived by a host of loving cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on November 8, 2023 11:00am-4:00pm (Memorial Service 11am-12pm) at the Glen Island Harbour Club, Glen Island Park, Weyman Avenue, New Rochelle, NY.

It's been a tough year not being able to call Harold and tell him who's playing at the Blue Note or Birdland. I can't call him and razz the Cowboys or complain about the Knicks. I can't share any of my latest writings or have him attend my graduation two years from now. Rather than focus on what I can't do, I'd rather focus on what I still have, and that's the memory of a great friend for the last fifty years. I will always have great memories of all the things we did together and those are memories that will live forever. He'll always be missed but never forgotten.

Fond childhood memories growing up... Fishing and swimming in the Chesapeake Bay. Playing outdoors as children, and all the mischief that goes along with that!!! Harold A. Young Jr. was the oldest of my first cousins - a mentor, leader, and friend!

"In Christ", my heart-felt condolences go out to Margaret and Edgar!

My heart is heavy as I write what I never thought I would ever have to. I am still mourning the loss of a friendship that has lasted over five decades. Harold and I were brothers from other mothers, and to no surprise, our mothers knew each other. We both believed in living life to the fullest, and Harold excelled in all his endeavors. He was a successful business executive while still taking the time to pursue the things he really loved. We attended well over a thousand jazz concerts together. We rode our bicycles hundreds of miles every summer and played hundreds of basketball games with and against each other. I could always call him, and he´d be willing to join me in different social and cultural activities. Our birthdays were three weeks apart, and we always took the time to celebrate. I am going to miss my brother but have to focus on the friendship I had and not what I don´t have any longer. Our friendship made me a better person, and I hope as he continues his journey, I had the same impact on him. Rest in peace, and your spirit will live with us forever.

I met Harold through a mutual friend and I worked with him at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company at the start of my banking career. I always say that Harold introduced me to banking. He was an amazing person who was gifted with laser perception about people and situations and a very generous heart.
God Bless you Harold and you family. You are a special person.

Harold was my first manager when i joined the International Product Management Group at Bankers Trust. He was instrumental in teaching me trade finance and was a great mentor to me early in my career. Most importantly he taught me to treat all people with respect and to be true to my core values. While our careers took us in different directions for a while, we re-united at Deutsche Bank in differnet roles in NY and he was always there for support and guidance. Rest in Peace Harold. God Bless.
