Henry Bayer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2017.
Henry Walter Bayer, age 90 of Warren, died Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Windemere Park Assisted Living Center in Warren. He was born February 10, 1927 in Detroit, son of the late Walter and the late Helen (nee: Kukla) Bayer. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Henry for his service to our country during World War II as a soldier in our great U.S. Army. Answering his call with pride and patriotism, Henry served from April 1945 thru December 1946, with a year of that time stationed overseas in Japan and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. A decorated veteran and proud American, we honor his bravery and willingness to stand in harm's way for freedom's sake, and helping to preserve the liberties we enjoy today because he was there. A machine builder in the manufacturing trades, Henry was diligent in his work and extended the utmost in dedicated service to his career. Away from the job, those hard work ethics still were very much in play as Henry was noted for being the consummate "Fix-It Guy." Always tinkering with something, repairing things, or giving a tweak where needed, there wasn't much that he couldn't do but was always willing to give it the college try. Of all that Henry did work with, one of his favorite mediums was dabbling in woodworking. He loved to take a raw piece of wood and form it into something beautiful and eye-appealing using his artistic flair that lie within. His home was rife with many of the treasures he had created over the years for all to enjoy. Some of Henry's other enjoyments were found in the gaming realm, specifically through the fun and entertainment he derived from visiting the casino and giving Ol' Lady Luck a run for her money. Every entry through those doors was met with bright hope,…and hopefully not with empty pockets. He also loved to play card games, most notably Poker. Even more games of chance vs. luck, but now it was a bit more personal as he found immense delight in sitting around the table with family and friends alike, tossin' some cards, and sharing in some friendly banter and competition. Even if you lose, you can never go wrong in a little card playing action with loved ones amidst comfortable settings. Yet of all that he enjoyed the most, there was nothing that could hold a candle to the love and adoration he possessed for his grandchildren. Yes, his love and care for the family as a whole came without question. Ah,…but these cherubs from heaven, David, Katie, Matthew & Rachel, they came with an entirely different scope of love that only a grandparent can appreciate,…and a love he expressed to each of them in abundance. Known more affectionately as "Papa," he helped create many of those precious moments that are held dear to this day,…because he loved them so immeasurably. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Henry made life that much more special simply by being a part of it. His influences were impacting, his love was immense, and he touched a multitude of hearts and souls in his journey through life. From his child-rearing compassion, to his grandfatherly lap, to his servant's heart, this was a man of God's own heart and one who will forever be remembered by his love. Henry will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Henry was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy, and dear father of David (Frances) Bayer and Sue (Robert) Stieber. Loving "Papa" of David, Katie, Matthew, and Rachel. He also leaves sister, Delores. Visitation for Henry will be held Saturday, December 30th from 3:00 – 9:00 pm, with a 7:30 pm Funeral Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd.) in Warren. Henry will eventually be laid to rest with his beloved Dorothy at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. A Committal Service, with Military Honors, will be rendered in Henry's honor at a future date to be determined. Please check back for updates. All of my memories of Uncle Henry give me happiness and smiles. When he came to visit me in Canada he shared some great and funny stories, making it hard to focus on a family card game. In my early childhood he was the family photographer, taking movies of vacations, birthdays and holidays. He even brought his vintage movie projector and movies (which he maintained over 60 years) when he came to visit.
When we would talk on the phone, there was never a time he didn't tell me how much he missed his wife Dorothy. Now they are together again.
You will be greatly missed Uncle.
May you rest in peace.

One of the most recent memories I have of my Uncle Henry was when we invited him for a "road trip to Canada" to visit with Gloria. The car was packed to the brim with people and luggage, and we go and pick him up, and I asked him where his suitcase was, he said right here, and handed me a small antique suitcase with travel stickers all over it. He said that's the only suitcase he's ever owned, and still uses. It was great fun just to see all the travel stickers he had on that suitcase and for him to tell a bit about where he had been with that suitcase. During the road trip, I was driving and he had a window seat, and wouldn't let go of the hanging strap above the window during the entire 11 hour trip. I started to wonder if maybe my driving was making him a bit nervous but he responded, "that's why that strap is there in the car, to hang on to". It was a privilege to have that road trip & visit with Uncle Henry and hear all the funny stories he told; we were laughing all the way to Canada! Whenever he spoke of Aunt Dorothy there was always tears in his eyes, and although there is great sadness that he is gone, its nice to know he is now with her. He will truly be missed!
