Howard Cargill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2012.
Dr. Howard Wyatt Cargill was born in Chriesman, Texas on February 14, 1927, the son of the late George and Stella Cargill. He left to be with his Heavenly Father on November 12, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.

Howard graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, Texas in 1944 and was a proud member of the fighting Texas Aggie Class of '48. He graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine after proudly serving two years in the United States Army. He married Irene Metzer Cargill on June 14, 1947.

In 1953, he established the first private veterinary hospital in the Brazos Valley. Later, he practiced at Bryan Animal Clinic along with his brother, Bobby Joe Cargill. He was co-owner of El Cerrito Animal Clinic with his brother, Bobby and the practice is now owned by his son, Dr. Tommy Cargill. He retired in 1992 to pursue his life-long passion of ranching on the C6 Ranch that he and Irene established in 1958.

Among numerous accomplishments, he was President of the Bryan Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellowship Recipient, President of Brazos Valley Veterinary Medical Association, Board Member of City National Bank in Bryan, Texas, President and Board Member of the Brazos County's Producers Cooperative Association, and President of the BISD Board of Trustees. He was also a life-long supporter of Texas A&M and started a family legacy with fifteen children and grandchildren graduating from A&M.

His spiritual leadership in his church and family was admirable. He was a member of Steep Hollow Baptist Church for more than sixty years where he served as a Deacon and was a Sunday School teacher for over fifty years. He has been a member of First Baptist Church in Bryan for the last five years. One of his greatest sources of pride was that his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are all believers in Jesus Christ as he was. He was a true southern gentleman with a strong work ethic. He believed in truth, honesty and integrity and he loved his God, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Stella Cargill; his sister-in-law, Betsy Cargill; sister, Louise and her husband Jerry Waggoner; and brother, Bobby Joe Cargill.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene Metzer Cargill; his brother, H.L. Bud Cargill; sister-in-law, Barbara Cargill; sister Joyce Martin and her husband, Fred; son, Dr. Thomas Howard Cargill and his wife, Janie; son, Bobby Wayne Cargill and his wife, Ann; daughter, Karen Cargill Davison and her husband, Richard; daughter, Sharon Cargill Reece and her husband, Michael; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Bryan Cargill Reece & wife Jennifer, BobiAnn Cargill Allen & husband Jared, Karen Reece Trotter & husband David, Courtney Cargill Dozier & husband Jarrett, Andress Davison Koenning & husband Patrick, Marcus Wayne Cargill & wife Holly, John Thomas Cargill & wife Sarah, Richard Read Davison, David Wyatt Cargill & wife Janna, Howard Morgan Davison; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, Texas from 4:30-6:30pm and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Bryan at 2:00 pm.

It was my honor and privilege to know, work for and learn from this most beloved man of God. He was and is a role model as well as my mentor in most areas of this life; embodying the word " Integrity " as no other I've ever known. God bless his loving family and give them Peace of mind, Joy in Christ Jesus and happiness in the knowledge that he is with our Lord Jesus.

Tommy and Janie, at such a sorrowful time for you - our sincere regrets. We are deeply sorrowed for you and your family. We shall remain prayerful for you all through your ordeal. We will never forget your family's kindness and presence when we were experiencing grief over the loss of our father.
Dr. Howard prayed a touching prayer at our father's funeral (Bob Campbell Sr.). We talk about that prayer when we remember our father. Our prayer, as well, is that Jesus will speak to God in behalf of your kind hearted father in such a manner as the prayer he prayed for our father.
May God keep you all in His hands.
From the Campbell children: James A., Bob Jr., Sgt. Bobby S., Jason E., Officer Dorcas B., Kristina L., Grace A., and Sam Elliott, and our mother – Sam.

Praying for family in this great loss, only lightened by knowing he is now with the Lord. Reading the obituary know he was a man of christian and professional influence which we have witnessed in his son and wife, Bobby and Ann, long time friends. Praying for God's mercy, grace, and love for each of you. Love in Christ, Gladys and Jim Crouch

I met Dr. Cargill and his wife over 35 years ago while attending Steep Hollow Church with my sister and her husband. I will never forget the kindness that Dr. Cargill showed to all people. This carried over in the way he handled his business also. I will have fond memories of him. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family.

Mere words can not describe our loss of Dr Cargill, however I wish to offer my deepest condolence to Ms. Irene and family at their loss. Dr Cargill inspired many lives that he touched in our community and I am extremely proud to have had the opportunity to know and work with him. He was my friend and I valued his opinions and wisdom. Our community will miss him, as will I. May the family take courage in knowing that we all owe a lot to Dr Cargill for his contribution to the citizens of this county. May he rest forever in peace.
