SPARTANBURG--Irene Fendley Champion, 101, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living-Centennial, CO. Born July 28, 1917 at Salem, SC, she was the daughter of the late Namma Alexander Fendley and James Fendley. She was the widow of John Wesley Champion of Mayo, SC.
Irene graduated Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1938. She retired after 36 years of teaching in the Spartanburg County School Systems. She was a member of professional organizations at the national, state and local levels. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Educators. She was a member of HOPE Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church Spartanburg and also worked in the children's department there for many years.
Her interests included gardening and travel. She spent many hours working in her flower and vegetable gardens and beautifying her yard.
Survivors include her son, John Wesley Champion, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Centennial, CO; granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Champion of Arvada, CO and grandson, John Michael Champion of Vancouver, BC, Canada; as well as many nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by a sister, Rubye F. Mayes of Columbia, SC; and brothers, James C. of Mobile, AL, Eugene of Spartanburg, SC, Herbert of Columbia, SC and Fred of Brevard, NC.
Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307 with funeral services following at 11:00 AM, conducted by the Rev. Reid Bowyer. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
