John "Jack" Hoddy July 9, 1930 - March 16, 2011 Jewett City - John E. Hoddy, 80, of Ashland Street passed away Wednesday morning at W.W. Backus Hospital. He was born July 9, 1930 in Norwich, CT son to the late Joseph and Violet (Harris) Hoddy. On April 27, 1957 he was married to Virginia Boule at St. Mary's Church in Jewett City. She survives him. He was a lifelong resident of Jewett City, where he dedicated much time and energy over the years to his community. In the town of Griswold, he was a former Tax Collector, Selectman, Director of Elderly Housing, and Board of Education member. He was a member of the Griswold Democratic Town Committee, St. Mary's Church and the Knights of Columbus in Jewett City, and was a past president of the local Jaycees. Jack was a veteran, serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Jack was also a business man. At one time, he was the owner of the State Theater in Jewett City, the Midtown Theater in Norwich, and the Mansfield Drive-In. Jack loved his town and Griswold High School. He also loved traveling, snow skiing, movies, and sports: especially, the Boston Red Sox. Jack loved all of these things, but nothing more than his family. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Christopher W. Hoddy and his wife Bonnie of Griswold, and Gregory Hoddy and his wife Lisa of Griswold, and his two daughters, Cynthia Lamb and her husband Jerry of Salem, and Susan A. Snyder of Sterling. In addition, Jack is survived by nine grandchildren: Sean Hoddy, Lauren Hoddy, Ashley Hoddy, Kyle Hoddy, Colin Hoddy, Eric Snyder, Samantha Snyder, Chelsey Miller, and Elizabeth Miller. He was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm Hoddy, and two sisters, Ruth Palmer and Virginia Wodicka. Calling hours will be 3:00-6:00 PM Sunday at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Rd Jewett City, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00AM Monday at St. Mary's Church, Jewett City. Family and friends will meet directly at the church. Interment will follow in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's memory to the Griswold Ambulance.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Jack. He loved the movies. He worked as a projectionist for us for many years when we operated the State Theater in the 70's and 80's. Whenever we played a James Bond movie he would be in to watch it every night working or not. One of the good guys. He will be missed.
