John Struck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2024.
John Roger Struck, age 66, of Lumpkin County, Georgia, met his Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face on May 4, 2024, due to unexpected medical complications related to surgery. Born January 8, 1958, in Miami Beach, Florida, John was a beloved husband, father, friend, teacher, and mentor. John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jenny, and his children Gorden, Aaron, and Rebekah.

John was a graduate of Miami Killian Senior High School and The University of Texas at Austin where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Speech in 1982. He continued his education and earned a Texas Teacher Certificate in History and Speech in 1984.

John began his 34-year teaching career in Round Rock, Texas, where he taught US History and coached the school swim team. In 1987 John and his wife moved to Fairfax County, Virginia. He taught at Thomas Edison High School, Fairfax High School, and for the last 24 years of his career at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Along with his deep knowledge of American history, John brought humor and a positive, caring environment to his classroom. During his tenure, he received the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History 2014 Virginia History Teacher of the Year Award. John was an AP US History reader since 1999, serving as a table leader and early table leader. He was also a consultant for the College Board in AP US History for the last eighteen years. In 2008 John served on a teacher's panel for the revision of the AP US History exam, consulted with the Khan Academy in their development of an online AP US History course, with the Bill of Rights Institute in their development of practice exam questions, and with McGraw-Hill Publishers on their revised AP US History textbook. Beyond his professional pursuits, John enjoyed working with students and his desire was to provide them with a relevant and positive educational experience.

John was a man of great character. He was known for his devotion to his family, faith-based family, his dry humor, unwavering loyalty, leadership, and a role model for his children. John was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins, The University of Texas Longhorns, and followed competitive swimming with intense interest. He coached both school and summer league swim teams for 18 years. He also loved gardening, bird watching, and reading.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lake Ridge Baptist Church, Lake Ridge, Virginia on Saturday, July 27th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the building fund of Creekstone Church, Dahlonega, Georgia and the RUF campus ministry at the University of North Georgia in honor of John Struck. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, His mercies never come to an end.

They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.

I had Mr. Struck for World History one summer at TJ. He was a truly wonderful teacher -- kind, knowledgeable, funny. He was one of my favorites, a sentiment I know I shared with many of my friends and peers. He will be missed dearly.

I had the privilege of working with John for five years at TJHSST. He was a great colleague and friend. John was a truly outstanding teacher who cared about his students and taught history with integrity and passion. I was devastated when I heard about his passing...obviously far too young. There is comfort in knowing that he was a man of faith.

John Struck was one of the best and kindest teachers I had. His energy and enthusiasm are part of why I studied history at university and am interested in it to this day. I was so sorry to hear of his death so young. He and his family will be in my prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about John Struck's passing. He was my AP US History teacher at TJ in 2003-2004, and undoubtedly one of the best teachers I had the privilege of learning from. Whenever I came back to visit TJ during my breaks from college, he was always one of the first teachers I would visit. I was never particularly interested in History growing up, but Mr. Struck had a remarkable ability of not only keeping our class engaged, but also tying the historical lesson of the day back to something relatable to a bunch of 16-17 year olds in the 21st century. He genuinely cared about his students (not just our grades, but our overall well-being) - and while he certainly prepared us well for the AP exam, I think more importantly (through his patience, kindness, and unwavering humor) he prepared us all to lead enriching lives after high school. Sending my love and prayers to the Struck family.
