Jonathan Scott Thomas, 31, of Troy entered eternal life on Saturday, February 22, 2020. He was the first-born child to Michael and Lori Beth Thomas. Born with excess energy, his loving grandfather called him “the wrecker.” As a toddler, Jon could climb the highest rope in the gym and the largest tree in the yard yet could sit on your lap and challenge his imagination listening at length to stories and questioning the illustrations. He was a passionate wrestler starting at the age of twelve. High achievement in this complicated sport gave Jon another outlet and a mastery of basic skills and moves. He competed in Junior Olympics and AAU until entering high school. He earned numerous honors in high school including Colt of the Year Awards, two time All State recognitions, and the recipient of the Don Hill Scholarship. He graduated from Troy High School in 2006 and went on to compete as a NCAA Division 1 wrestler at Michigan State University. His love of the sport, along with sportsmanship and leadership qualities, led him back to Troy High to coach and later officiate. He served his country honorably in the Michigan Air National Guard which lead him into a career in purchasing. He later started his own business called the Veterans Group. Most recently he held a Technical Sales Position for Konica Minolta in California. He was an intelligent young man who loved to play chess with his uncle. He had a compassionate heart and was always willing to help those in need. He will be missed. Jonathan is survived by his parents, Michael and Lori Beth, a sister, Lisa Thomas, a brother, Kevin Thomas; his grandmother, Marlyse Boes; aunts and uncles, Patty Thomas, Larry (Diane) Thomas, Judy (Kent) West, Patrick Thomas, Francine Whelan, Mary Thomas, Theresa (Mike) Anderson, Jeff (Nina) Boes, Lisa (Nick) Krawczyk and Greg Boes; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Francine Thomas, William Thomas and Gerald Boes; his uncle and godfather, Bill Thomas; and uncle Bob Thomas. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4580 North Adams Road, Troy, Michigan 48098. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed through the family. Donations can be mailed to Bower Rose Funeral Home, 222 N. Main Street, Marine City, MI, 48039. Arrangements were made by Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City. To send condolences, visit:www.bowerrosefuneralhome.com.

Jon Thomas was my head wrestling coach at Troy high 2012-2016. He was the best coach I´ve had and that goes for any sport. He really cared about making us the best version of ourselves and not just on the mat but in all aspects of life. I have nothing but good memories of Jon, he´s given me plenty of advice for life in general that I still live by to this day, he was a great role model, mentor, coach, and also a friend to me. I was going to stop wrestling my senior year and I remember having a meeting with Jon before the season started and he really talked me back into it and I´m really glad he took time to do that, a decision that I know I would´ve regretted because I look back the memories and it´s all great memories. Gone but never forgotten.

A coaches dream! He soaked it up like a sponge. Everything I would show and the philosophy behind it he could recite back to me in action and word. It was my humble honor to be able to train with this kid in a sport that we both loved to our core. He had a gift, and I only hope I helped elevate that gift even in the smallest way. A piece of the heart is always left on the mat when one of our brothers is no longer with us, and it’s no different with this special kid. In Hoc.and “let’s be safe out there”.

Jon was a loyal friend.
He inspired everyone in his presence to work harder, do more, and be tougher. Always a fierce competitor, the goal was to keep up with Jon. Many of us could not.
His laugh, "atta boy", and vice-grip handshake were validation we all sought out. His encouragement gave confidence, and his straightforward assessments challenged us to do better. Jon shaped the character of many whom he coached, lived, worked, wrestled with, and befriended. He made an indelible mark, and remains permanently part of our lives.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and family, I am deeply grieved by Jon's passing. I will always remember him with love.
I pray for Jon and your family during this time of great sadness.

Jon, we spent a lifetime walking beside one another. All the things we did together - the laughs we had, the tears we shed, the mistakes we made - I'm glad to have experienced them all with you.
The ebb and flow of our lives were very much aligned. We related to one another on a level that very few people get to experience with those in their lives. I was and continue to be extremely grateful to have known you. It was an even bigger blessing to call you family.
I miss you. I love you. I still have your back.
