Kevin Doherty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2017.
Kevin Francis Doherty (age 63), beloved husband, father, Papa, son, brother, uncle, co-worker and friend, passed away on November 7, 2017 after his terrible battle with brain cancer. We will never forget his constant teasing of his wife, Joyce, his dedication to his children, Erin and Patrick, and the never-ending happiness that his grandchildren brought him.

Kevin was born in Boston before moving to Philadelphia and then to Syracuse at the age of 10. Once in Syracuse, the Doherty family moved onto Elm Street where Kevin met his future wife, Joyce. Joyce and Kevin grew up on Elm Street and went to Cicero High School together, where Kevin graduated in the top 10% and Joyce in the bottom 10% - which he frequently reminded her of! They were married in 1980 and after moving around several times for Kevin's job, finally settled in Colorado in 1988. Despite the absence of family close by, Kevin and Joyce built a wonderful life for themselves and their children, making amazing friends that have turned into family, putting their children through All Souls, then Mullen High School and never missing a soccer, baseball or volleyball game along the way. Once older, Kevin and Joyce's focus shifted to their grandchildren, whom they spoiled relentlessly.

Jack, Beau, Cash and Ava - Papa came to life again when you were born. His greatest joy in life was watching you, taking you to school, Donut Day, Milkshake Day, going to practices, never missing a game, Nerf wars, teaching you to march, dance, and reminding you that there is no "T.O." when you're playing with Papa. We will never let you forget him and his traditions will live on through all of you.

We hope you're back to doing the gauntlet for 70+ minutes/day, watching your favorite movies, running with all our pups + Dorese, and watching football + drinking bottomless milkshakes with Grandpa. We know you'll be tuning into the kids' baseball and lacrosse games, graduations, parties, spelling tests, holidays and will find a way to tease mom whenever you can.

You always told me and Patrick that you wanted to give us a better life than what you had. All I can say is DONE. Thank you for the best life and the most wonderful memories. You are truly one-of-a-kind and WE LOVE YOU. ??????

Thank you for all of the prayers, cards, texts, and Facebook messages. My dad impacted so many people and we are so thankful to hear all your memories and how he was a part of your lives. From his Midwest/CBK people to Syracuse friends to family to friends of mine and Patrick's to our Arthur Lane crew and all our Colorado friends that have become family - your love and constant support have been invaluable - THANK YOU - we love you all and so did he. The loss we are feeling is massive and you continue to help us through this immensely difficult time.

Kevin is preceded in death by his father, Francis James Doherty, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Dorese Doherty. Kevin is survived by his wife of 37 years, Joyce (Clark) Doherty of Lone Tree, CO; daughter, Erin (Benjamin) Wilson of Parker, CO; son, Patrick (Ashley) Doherty of Parker, CO; beloved grandchildren, Jack Michael Wilson, Beau Patrick Wilson, Cash Francis Wilson and Ava James Doherty, all of Parker, CO; mother, Mary Willena (Walsh); brothers, Brian (Dorese, d.) Doherty of Schenectady, NY and Terence Doherty of New York, NY; sisters, Maryanne (Mary Radford) Doherty of Syracuse, NY and Jeanneanne (James) Bonanni of Liverpool, NY; sister-in-law, Alice (Harlan) Bernstein of Portland, OR; nieces and nephews, Caitlin (Kevin) Pluff of New York, NY, Matthew Doherty of Schenectady, NY, Shannon Doherty of Schenectady, NY, Colin Speidel of Portland, OR, John Bonanni of Rochester, NY, Alexandra Bonanni of Liverpool, NY, Mary Kate Bonanni of Ithaca, NY, and Will and Kate Radford of Syracuse, NY; and will also be greatly missed by many other loving family and friends.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Monday, November 13, 2017 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 S Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 8035 S Quebec St, Centennial, CO 80112 with Committal Service immediately following at 12:30 pm at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery. I'm so sorry to hear about Kevin's illness and death. Kevin helped me with my first ever, Midwest order in January, 2002 and we always joked about the learning curve I didn't even know was before me in the retail industry. Last January, I attended the Las Vegas wholesale show and missed Kevin's presence in the show room and learned he had a health challenge at that time. Sending my sympathy to you Joyce and your family. I will always hold those memories of my early retail years and Midwest orders close to my heart. Kevin will be greatly missed. Hugs and prayers, Kathy George, Rustic Mountain Charm, Estes Park, CO.

Picturing Kevin, the sparkle in his eye and smile come to mind. He was the embodiment of the fundamental decency that we all cherish and hope to impart to our kids. Good humor, patience, hard work, overcoming challenges with grace, kindness, and expressing dissatisfaction with gentleness are only a few of the virtues he modeled for the rest of us. But it was his love of family that was paramount. We mourn his passing and feel the world must step up to compensate for his absence. To you, Joyce, Erin, Ben, Patrick, Ashley and all your beautiful children, we are so very sorry. Just as Kevin's love for you was immense, may God comfort and bless you abundantly. You are all in our thoughts and prayers, and we send you our love.

The news of Kevin's passing has been a shock to many Cicero High classmates who played and partied together through those formative years of life; but lost touch over the years. We were all blessed to have known him and been a small part of his life. He will be missed but always a cherished piece of our collage of life. My deepest sympathies to Joyce and the entire Doherty extended family.
