Lawrence Zablan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2014.
Lawrence "Uncle Larry" Zablan, 64, of Honolulu, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 1:30am.

He was born to the late Jensen K. Zablan and Annette Louise Kim Han, October 14, 1949, in Honolulu, HI. Uncle Larry graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1967. He married Julie-Ann Malczon-Zablan in June 1994.

Uncle Larry was a life long educator of Hawaiiana and very passionate about sharing his love of the culture with all those he came in to contact with. He started off as a tour bus driver, singing to the tourists on board and sharing little tidbits of Hawai?i trivia. Uncle Larry was known to throw in a joke or two and was always able to woo the crowd. Over the years his love for the people and Hawaiian culture grew as did his knowledge of the islands. Eventually Uncle Larry began teaching the other drivers how to use their "5 senses" in order to share the true meaning of ALOHA. After 42 years of service with Roberts Hawaii, Uncle Larry retired in December of 2013.

Uncle Larry is survived by his daughter Leslie Diane Kawehilani (Zablan) Bailon; stepson Ronald Loo; stepson Andrew "Bo" Loo; stepdaughter Jamie Guerra; granddaughter Kamelelananahenahe "Nahe" Bailon; grandson Ku?umakaonaona "Maka" Bailon; granddaughter Anela Loo; grandson Seth "Keka" Loo; granddaughter Daijha Loo; granddaughter Reagan Guerra; granddaughter Madison Guerra; great-grandson Skyden Loo-Rosales; great-grandson Tyson Loo-Rosales; great-granddaughter Merahi Teriipaia-Loo; and great-grandson Kionu Pasco.

The family is requesting that there be no flower arrangements but lei are welcomed.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Borthwick Mortuary in the Maunakea & Vineyard Chapel.

Larry may you rest in peace. To his Ohana so sorry that we did not attended his funeral, Paulo and I didn't know he had passed. We were so fortunate that he was our Best Man for our Wedding 11/1975... He was a good friend to us and since we relocated to Maui we lost touch. God bless.. Aloha pumehana... Larry, A great high school friend, I remember all the good times we had, from picking mango and eating it in class, fishing where we should'nt have been, just running around and having fun. We got are drivers license together at the Kailua Police Station. Pals forever, Ray Lee

Larry, I was saddened to hear that you left, even after 50+ years. Yes, I also remember, as another Manoa neighbor has reminisced, fond memories of fun times on Loulu Street -- those were carefree and innocence days. I still remember when you got ahold of my baby picture with the beanie hat and showed it to everybody at Roosevelt High School. I was so embarrassed. I think my brother, Brian, may have had a part in this ruse. Right now, I know you are reuniting with Brian, reliving the fun times, and still joking around. Yes, he passed away in D.C. on September, 2009. I had 18 precious months with him before he passed.

Strange as it seems, I will miss you even after not seeing you for over 50 years. But you and your family must know that:

His extensive knowledge of Hawaiiana and his terrific memory never made him an arrogant man. Instead, he was humble, friendly and modest-always sharing his knowledge of Hawaiian history and his love of its people and land, treating guests as if they were part of his family and being ever resourceful in the way he lived.

We will always treasure and appreciate Larry's legacy and thank his wife, Julie, for her patience and strength (both physical and emotional) in caring for such a wonderful man who will forever remain in our hearts.

Hawaii just lost it's greatest ambassador, Larry loved Hawaii, and Hawaii loved Larry. Our family has great comfort and consolation in the legacy of love that you left us, we can look back at your life with pride and admiration. What a generous, neat, compassionate, loving and talented man you were. Being around you, made the world a better place. I love you brother, and losing you, leaves a hole in our hearts, that only fond memories of you can fill. Larry, your best asset was your heart, it was always in the right place. Mahalo
