MARTHA ULMAN

ULMAN--Martha Heck, age 85, of Greenport, NY, formerly of Oyster Bay, NY, died on October 20, 2022. She attended The Spence School and was a graduate of Ethel Walker School (1955) and Wheaton College (1959). She went on to earn her masters in History, Summa Cum Laude, from Long Island University in 2008. Martha wrote, A Power for Good: Clara B. Spence, a biography of her grandmother released on October 18, 2022. In the words of Kate Trambitskaya, CEO of Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, founded by Clara Spence and Dr. Henry and Alice Chapin, "(Martha's) soft voice always beamed with pride when she shared stories and anecdotes about her grandmother... Clara B. Spence was a pioneer in adoption and a progressive educator of young women in the early twentieth century. Martha wanted the world to know about her grandmother's legacy." In addition to being a published author, Martha was a nurturing mother, who loved gardening and took award-winning photos of both her flowers and children. She is survived by her son, Stephen M. (Beth), daughter, Cornelia S. Whelan, and grandchildren, Valerie, Abigail, Nathan and Hannah. Martha was predeceased by her husband Stephen in 2021. At her request, there will be no service. Donations can be made in her honor to the Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children.
