Norman Bloch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2024.
Born in Philadelphia, PA

Predeceased in death by wives Judith V. Bloch, Judith A. Bloch. brother Gene.

Norman is survived by his brother Daniel (Nicki), son Steven, daughter Susan, grandchildren Samantha, Zachary, Aaron,

step children: Kristen, Laura and Keith (Nelly), step-grandchildren: Alisha, Kaliah, Koah, Kiernan, Nephews and Nieces.

Norm was a graduate of Columbia University, University of Buffalo, followed by the University of Rochester, where he earned his PhD in mathematics in 1964.

Humbly downplaying the title of "Doctor", Mr. Bloch went on to teach Algebra, Calculus, Linear Algebra, et al. at Wayne State University in Detroit ('65 - '70), followed by SUNY Brockport for many years (1970 - ~2000). After his retirement from Brockport, he taught at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas.

His animated lessons encouraged his students to dig deeper in to the wonder that is math and its importance to the world.

He was an author and co-author of the college-level mathematic textbooks Abstract Algebra With Applications (Bloch, 1987), Linear Algebra (Bloch and Michaels, 1977).

Norm loved playing violin, crossword puzzles, sudoku (always trying to avoid erasures!), and Bridge. Notably, he was a Masterpoint Ranked Bridge player.

Known for his sense of humor, Norm loved hearing and telling jokes both good and bad (especially if both at same time. Haha), with a ready laugh, and inviting guffaw.

He loved sports, following teams in many sports, notably being a big fan of the Buffalo Bills. He participated in bowling, racket ball, swimming/snorkeling (especially in St. Thomas), ice skating, just to name a few. Norm was into photography and filming the family (on actual Kodak film!), which we would play back on an old school projector eating popcorn on film nights!

Norm was also an avid gardener, he loved planting trees, and conserving resources, knowing that our collective future would depend on these pursuits. He was an early adopter of recycling, doing his and his families' part in trying to support sustainability of our environment. He would often ride his bike instead of driving to work as part of this. These are just some of the traits that he has passed down to his family.

A private ceremony to be held at the Mt. Hope Cemetery Scattering Garden in Rochester, NY.

Pocket protectors...that was my first impression. I asked Mom if I should buy him more for the holidays. Shortly after living with Norm, I realized he was our guardian angel, and I never stopped thinking of him that way. Norm taught me how to drive. He was so calm and patient teaching, whether it was driving or math. I could only get tutored by Norm, not Mom. And I still think of him every time I check all of my mirrors. Norm changed my life in so many ways. His jokes...ugh...they were always my favorite. We shared a love of the Bills. Living in St. Thomas, I was in admiration of his mathematical calculation that if he swam X amount of laps, he could have a rum He had another fascination with how many mosquitos he would zap with his bug racket, keeping a tally in pencil on the racket...and he would justify the cost of that bug racket based on his tallies. Norm would dance with me and we loved listening to music together. Always my guardian angel

Norm was the best step father a kid could ever ask for. Having him as a teacher for Calculus 1 and 2 he always made me "dig deeper" and he surely loved his mice somewhere along the x and y axis. Some of my most enjoyable times with Norm came over the last 2 years where we would sit and enjoy some of Nelly's coquito, or a manhattan, let go of our present day stressors, and just shoot the breeze. I surely wouldn't be the person I am today without his influence in my life.
