Norman Eugene Elrod

NORMAN EUGENE ELROD, owner and founder of Elrod Fence Company and a devoted family man above all else, passed away on September 4, 2014 in Riverside while surrounded by his loved ones. He was 77. Norman Eugene Elrod was born in Los Angeles on May 10, 1937, the son of Elmer and Dorothy Elrod. Norman is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Janice Louise Drake; son Bob and four daughters: Denise, Debbie, Cindy, and Becky. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren all of whom affectionately referred to him as "Papa." After meeting the love of his life, Janice, at 15 y.o. and 13 y.o., respectively, the two wed in 1955 in Quartzsite, Arizona. In his early years, Norman traveled between Los Angeles and Arizona, where he worked in gold mines during the summer months. He moved to Riverside and later built Elrod Fence Company, where he had been the founder and owner since 1969. Although he achieved great success as a self-made businessman, Norman considered his family as the most important accomplishment in his life. As a loving husband and committed family man, he cherished any occasion to be with his kids and grandkids; taking trips to Catheys Valley where he owned a ranch; and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. He was a great storyteller, and his personality, values, and authenticity always attracted people to him. Norman was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and kept his faith throughout his lifetime. A memorial service for friends and family will be held in his honor this Friday, Sept. 12 at 10:00 AM at Pierce Bros. Crestlawn Memorial Park and Mortuary in Riverside. There will be a gathering at Nellie Weaver Hall in Norco immediately following the service.
