Richard David Lennon - 11-24-1943-5-10-2025

Affectionately known as Dick, Grandpa, or Ba, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he split his time between Stuart, Florida at Mariner Sands and Mere Point, Maine, where he found peace, joy, and community.

Born in 1943 in Tuckahoe, New York, Richard was the fifth child of seven, born to Edmund and Catherine Lennon. During his early childhood, the family moved to Summit, New Jersey-a place that would become the backdrop of many cherished memories. Growing up on Sunset Drive, there was never a dull moment with the Lennon boys, and it was there that he formed lifelong friendships.

Dick attended the Delbarton School, where he felt tremendous support from the monks when he lost his father at the age of 14. It was there that he learned the importance of service and giving back to one's community - a guiding principle throughout his life. He went on to graduate from Summit High School in 1962 and then to attend Rutgers University. Dick also served his country as a drill sergeant, a role that reflected his strong leadership and quiet resilience.

On June 24th 1963 Dick met the love of his life, Cathleen (Cathy) Baron. They married in 1968 and made their cozy home in Summit, where they raised their children-Meghan, Matthew, Brian (deceased), and Devon. Dick's devotion to his family was unwavering. Whether it was playing on the floor after a long day at work or delighting his kids with Saturday breakfasts of Oreos and milk; he always made time for those he loved most.

Dick and Cathie enjoyed a beautiful life together; they traveled the world, played golf, and delighted in hosting family gatherings in New Jersey, Florida, and Maine.

Professionally, Dick's drive and integrity contributed to an over four decade silent partnership at Champion Container. His big heart compelled him to find ways of giving back to his community. He played a vital role in building the YMCA in Summit, donned a red suit as the jolly Santa at the Beacon Hill Club for many years, and offered his time and support to numerous charities; particularly the Hibiscus House in Florida.

He was a spiritual man who enjoyed leading a bible study group where he emphasized compassion and forgiveness. He was a loving and present father and grandfather, known for his warmth, his steadfast support, and a host of unforgettable expressions that his family still quotes fondly. He sang Christmas songs in July and could be found cutting a rug at any celebration. He enjoyed casting a line with his fishing buddy, Jerry, in Maine, playing a relaxing round of golf, and savoring a stiff gin and tonic at the end of the day.

Richard David Lennon lived a life rooted in love, loyalty, and laughter - punctuated by his signature Lennon cackle. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and devotion that will live on in all who had the honor of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cathleen; his daughter Meghan (Geoffrey) and grandchildren Ella and Grey; his son Matthew; and his daughter Devon (Ted) and grandchildren Laird and Scarlett.

His family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful angels at Treasure Coast Hospice for their compassionate care in Dick's final weeks.

A celebration of life will be held on May 30th, 9:30am, at St. Teresa of Avila Parish in Summit, NJ. All are welcome.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dick´s passing, and I wanted to reach out with love and remembrance from a time that still lives vividly in my heart. Growing up together on Hobart Avenue in Summit holds such a special place in my memory-your iconic home on the corner, the trampoline that brought so many belly laughs, and the warmth that radiated from every dinner party, every shared moment indoors and out.

I´ll never forget Dick´s 40th-"Oh Lordy, Dick´s 40!"-a banner that felt like a milestone back then, but now, in hindsight, was just the beginning of a beautifully lived life. Your father had a spark that lit up a room, a wit that lingered, and a kindness that stayed with you.

It warms my heart to imagine the brightness with which he was welcomed beyond the veil-by those who loved him first and now receive him again. What a life he lived with the greatest of love for his family.

With love & remembrance,
Anne Pearce Ornish

To know him was to love him! Dick was a legend (often self proclaimed!) at both Mere Point and Mariner Sands! If he didn´t agree, we all knew it... whether it was a clause in the association bilaws, an assessment for $20 bucks, or an ungiven gimme putt from 6 feet, there was no doubt we´d here from the almighty Dick! We truly loved him deeply, as we do your entire family! We will miss him dearly and talk about him often (I can already hear Geoff mimicking him... in the most respectful way possible!). Godspeed, Ken and the entire Schmalz family!

To Cathie and family,
Chuck and I are both in the Mariner Sands choir, and we loved seeing you and Dick in the congregation, worshipping among our many mutual friends there. Chuck was in the same golf group as Dick and had many stories to tell of Dick and their adventures on the course.
We extend our deepest sympathy to you all for your loss, especially one so sudden and unexpected. We know of Dick´s great faith, so we know he is with God in heaven and those he loved who have passed before him.
