Robert Williams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2025.
Robert Herald Williams, Jr., 75, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on July 28th, 2025, after bravely defending his beloved wife, Sharon, during a tragic dog attack. He succumbed to his injuries just over an hour later at Regional One Health Hospital.

Born on July 13th, 1950, Robert lived a vibrant life grounded in faith, music, and service. He graduated from Kingsbury High School in 1968 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as an Avionics Technician. He often referred to his ship with humor as the "USS Neversail." Following his military service, Robert earned a Finance degree from Memphis State University (Go Tigers!) and later completed a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State Technical Institute.

Robert's professional journey reflected both talent and passion. He served faithfully for almost 40 years as Worship Pastor at First Baptist Church of Holly Springs, MS, pouring his heart and soul into the ministry. Robert also earned his Real Estate Broker's license and built a successful career at Sowards Realtors under the mentorship of Jerry and Carlene Sowards, who have been lifelong mentors and dear friends.

His love for gospel music ran deep. He performed in numerous gospel groups, including "Logos" with his friend Jimmy Stewart and "The Romarks" with Chris Taylor. With them, he represented Memphis in the "Up With People" cast and traveled to New York for musical workshops. There, he shared stages with future stars like Glenn Close and Danny DeVito. Robert was also a valued member of the "Memphian Quartet", which included Jerry Sowards, Joe Ewing, Mike Rebich, and 2-Time Grammy Award Winner and Producer Mark Goodman.

Robert's passion for snow skiing was legendary. A true gear aficionado, he embraced the slopes with enthusiasm and style. One of his most cherished skiing memories was a surprise full-day lesson with Olympic coach Harold Harb. It was a gift from Sharon, and it was the first time she had ever seen him completely speechless.

Above all, Robert was a man of deep faith. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at the age of ten and was called early in life to use his musical gifts for the glory of God. After retiring from First Baptist Church of Holly Springs, he and Sharon found a new spiritual home at Ridgeway Baptist Church, where he continued to serve faithfully during his retirement.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of almost 40 years, Sharon Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Herald Williams and Sadie "Susie" Williams. He leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, music, and unwavering faith.

On the day of his passing, Robert repeatedly intervened between Sharon and danger, placing himself between her and the attacking dogs without hesitation. Though grievously injured, he continued to defend her until help arrived. In his final moments, he demonstrated the very heart of the Gospel, selflessly laying down his life for the one he cherished most.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13

Robert lived to lift others through conviction, wisdom, and song. His legacy is not only to be remembered, but to be lived out just as he chose to live out the Gospel set forth by Christ himself.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Memphis Police and Fire Departments, EMTs, and the Trauma Center staff at Regional One Health. Special appreciation also goes to the many friends, neighbors, and church family members from Ridgeway Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Holly Springs, MS, who have surrounded them with love, prayer, and unwavering support during this profoundly difficult time.

Ronnie and I love you and are in constant prayer for you. The meaning of our friendship is difficult to put into words. Seeing you when we would come home to Holly Springs to visit always made things seem more peaceful and the hugs from you both seemed to heal. Seeing you always made me happy inside as I quietly prayed for easier times for us all. Thank you for always loving us and always greeting Ronnie and I with loving arms.

Life is very unexpected, but it is all in God's plan and He will take us through. Robert is greatly missed, but we are blessed by the life he lived and the wonderful memories we have shared. So sorry for your loss Sharon. I know Robert was devoted to three main things in life, God, You and his church.

Condolences to you, sweet Sharon, as I remember the years at Cherokee Baptist and the times of going out to sing especially at Christmas. To this day the duet of Robert and Carey singing "O Holy Night" will always be a very blessed memory and was the the best. It was so good to see you both visit Kirby Woods before I moved to East Tennessee. I know Robert is now singing in the presence of our precious Lord and Savior, his parents and many, many friends. I love dear Sister and praying for you and my home church is praying for you too. God bless you and give you comfort. Nell Brown
