Steven Osterland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2024.
Steven Otto Osterland, born on July 26, 1960, passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Harbor, Florida, on December 20, 2024, at the age of 64, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Steven grew up in LaGrange, Illinois, where he enjoyed cherished family gatherings with his many cousins. In high school, Steve was known as a good friend who always enjoyed humor and fun with his classmates. Along with his brother, Bob and his father Otto, Steve was a longstanding member of the Lutheran Dart League.

In December of 1994, Steve's cousin, Sue played matchmaker and introduced him to the love of his life, Cynthia Payne. On May 9, 1998, they were married. Steve and Cindy were constantly by each other's side enjoying traveling, music and just being together. They created beautiful homes in Naperville, Illinois and Palm Harbor, Florida. These homes held frequent holiday celebrations and barbecues with family and friends. From the most perfectly charred hotdog to the robust flavor of his smoked turkey, no one ever went home hungry. This made him happy.

A skilled plumber by trade, Steven was admired for his hard work and dedication. Beyond his profession, he loved being on the water-boating, kayaking , fishing and island hopping. He spent much of his life enjoying these activities on Lake Wisconsin and in the waters off of Honeymoon Island.

Steven is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Cynthia Payne Osterland; his brother Robert Osterland; his sister Deborah Osterland; and his step-siblings Diane Hornig (Don) and Dave Lehmann (Deb). He was a devoted uncle to nieces Danielle, Stephanie, Melanie, Kelly, Katie, Jessica, and Isabel; nephews Jerry and Randy; great-nieces Morgan, Hailey D., Claire, Abby, Ellie, Hailey H., Jillian, and Emilee; and great-nephews Brendan, Colin, Henry, Mark, Ben, Max, and Beckett. He also leaves behind many sisters-in-law-Kirstie, Robin, Holly, Wendy, and Julie-and brothers-in-law John, Ron, Mark and Drew.

He was preceded in death by his father Otto Osterland; mother Eleanore Osterland; stepmother Carol Osterland; aunts Mary and Lillian; and uncles Don and John.

Steven will be fondly remembered as a wonderful uncle who brought fun and laughter to all who knew him. His warmth and humor left an indelible mark on the lives of those around him. He will missed by the many people who had the privilege of loving him.

A celebration of Steven's life will be held in January 2025. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.

I have known Steve our entire lives. One of the things I will always remember about Steve is that every time we talked on the phone, text, shared clips of videos or were together, he ALWAYS made me laugh!!!! I can´t tell you how much I´m going to miss that, at least I´ll have those memories.. And when our families combined, he not only was a friend, he became my brother!!
Love you to the moon and back. Til we meet again!!!

I will never forget a trip we took to Door County (Steve, Cindy, Darrell & I). It was the first time I was around Steve for an extended period of time. He made me laugh the entire weekend!

His love for Cindy was evident in all that he did. I will always remember Steve as a loving husband who showed kindness to all and had a laugh that was so infectious. He will be GREATLY missed!

Some of my favorite memories are of going to my Auntie O and Uncle Steve´s house for dinner every week as a kid. My brother and I were always blown away by how strong he was as he would often have us put our arms out and lift us up or have us punch him in the stomach. I can now say he turned out to be even stronger than I thought him to be back then. He was such an amazing Uncle who taught me about the importance of laughter at a very young age; anyone who has met him knows that his laugh was the most contagious laugh you´d ever heard. I love my Uncle Steve and I miss him dearly.

Steve is our brother-in-law. There was an immediate connection when my husband and I first met him. We shared so many fun times with family and on some amazing trips together. He and Cindy shared an amazing relationship with each other but he was also there for us during their time together. Having grandchildren living in Naperville while living in Missouri was tough. Steve and Cindy stepped in as “ substitute grandparents,” something we will always be so greatful for. We will miss him terribly and think of him often.
