Victoria Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 30, 2024.
Victoria Thompson, 76, of Long Grove, IL passed away on August 23, 2024 after a years-long battle with cancer. Known informally as Vicki, she was an award-winning, bestselling author of over 50 novels, including the Gaslight Mysteries and the Counterfeit Lady Novels. She was also a college professor, mentor, and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Born Victoria Ellen Straface in Washington, DC on July 25, 1948, Vicki graduated from the University of Maryland in 1970. In 2012, she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA, a program for which she was also a professor from 2000-2023.

Vicki, who lived in Altoona, PA with her family from 1979-1982 and 1987-2003, published 20 historical romance novels before pivoting to historical mysteries in 1999. In 2012, she won a Career Achievement Award from Romantic Times magazine, and she's been nominated for numerous other awards, including Edgar® and Agatha Awards. Vicki also had a long and successful career as a non-profit fundraiser for March of Dimes and Lutheran Social Services in Central Pennsylvania. In recent years, she served on the Board of Trustees of the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire, IL, a position she particularly enjoyed.

Vicki is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jim Thompson, her sister Sue (Joe) Bredekamp of Cheverly, MD, her daughter Lisa (Rob) Thompson of Long Grove, IL, her daughter Ellen (Dave) Thompson Nemetz of Los Angeles, CA, her three grandchildren, Liam Thompson, Ryan Thompson, and KJ Thompson, and her beloved cancer support group. Vicki and her infectious laugh will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at Lake Forest Friends Meeting House in Lake Forest, IL at a later date. Donations can be made in Vicki's memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or March of Dimes.

I started 12 years ago reading Mrs. Thompson's books out loud to my declining bedridden Husband. After his death, I started back re-reading them in order (Gaslight Series) and with each one, am so admiring of this Lady's writing talent, and humor, and thorough research of NY at the turn of the Century. I have this whole Series, thought I'd look up more on her online a couple of nights ago, and was stunned to find out she had passed in 2024. I came close to crying; to lose this talent, and from what I've read about her personally, such a lovely person. And her battle with cancer broke my heart. I plan to obtain the rest of her writings, and hope the Family get royalties on them! Though belated, my earnest sympathies go out to Mrs. Thompson's Family -- but what a wonderful heritage you all will have as a result of this Person's life -- God Bless Her and You All as well -- Mrs. Alma Cosgrove of Greenville, SC; retired U.S. Government Librarian

We met Jim and Vicki in Altoona when doing work with Habitat for Humanity. They were gracious hosts allowing us to stay in their home. Our kids loved Jim's waffles. Our sympathy is extended to all of Vicki's family. Mike and Wendy Campbell

Reading her counterfeit books, brought such joy and hope. I lived h9w she used real events in her books and how Elizabeth was smart.

Vicki Thompson was one of the founding members of NJRW (New Jersey Romance Writers). I used to meet her at Romance Writers of America conferences and we'd have nice long and laughing talks. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.
