Wayne Tennant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 19 to Feb. 20, 2009.
TENNANT, Wayne (Richard) December 23, 1937 - February 15, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne, a loving husband, dad, papa, brother, uncle, friend and coach. We take comfort in knowing he is beyond pain now and that he was blessed with the opportunity to see many of his friends and relatives and to say good-bye to them before passing. Wayne was predeceased by his parents and four brothers (Joe, Vern, Elvin, and Alton). Wayne will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife, Lynn (Lavinia Chimera) of 50 years, his son Greg (Angela), daughter Shelley (Jeff Way), granddaughters Vanessa and Adrienne; two sisters, Dorothy (Vern) Longdo and June (Carl) Grasdal, along with his many extended family members and dear friends. Unfortunately, two days after Wayne's passing his sister, Lois Johnson, who was seventy-three years of age, also passed away from an illness. Wayne's passions in life were his family, hockey, making people laugh, helping others, hunting, golfing, and maintaining his yard. Wayne was actively involved in the hockey community in and around Edmonton for over 45 years, as a coach, mentor, and running the Wayne Tennant Hockey Conditioning camp for 39 years. He touched the lives of many people with his zest for life, his love of hockey, his ability to draw people close to him, make friends, help and guide many young men and become a surrogate dad to many of them, and his trademark sense of humor which he maintained all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrate his life on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Church, 6215 - 104 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Grey Nuns Hospital Infectious Disease unit under the direction of Dr. Curtis Boyington who became a close friend to Wayne and his family in such a short time: c/o Caritas Hospital Foundation, 11111 - Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L4; or to the Brick Sports Central an organization that assists underprivileged children with equipment so that they can participate in sports. The Brick Sport Central is located at 11847 - Wayne Gretzky Drive North, Edmonton, AB, T5B 1Y2. The family would also like to thank the staff at Station 53 and the Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Dr. Greg Hrynchyshyn, and Dr. Kristen Lyons who gave such wonderful care for Wayne in his time of need. Thinking of you all with sincere sympathy. It was our honor to know Wayne. He will always be remembered for his big laugh and ready humour but even more so for his truly kind and caring heart.
It's hard to find the right words but I have found in time that the memories will bring smiles instead of tears.
Take care.

Lynn and family,
Thoughts and prayers on the passing of Wayne. The Lord must have needed him to be the "bench boss" of his newest hockey team. We sometimes passed each other in the hockey rinks in the area and it was always with a huge smile and a nod of the head. Take care.

Dear Lavinia, Greg, Shelley & Families:

My sincere condolences on the loss of Wayne. I will always have good memories of him as such a teaser. I always remember the parties at Auntie Caroline & Uncle John's when I was a kid - I have to admit that sometimes he'd scare me but I knew it was all in good fun which was typical of Wayne. I know he will sadly be missed. You are all in my thoughts and my heart.
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

With love, June

Lynn, Greg, Shelley & Families:

My heartfelt sympathy to you all following Wayne's passing. Bea called me last night to inform me. Although your hearts are heavy at this time, hopefully wonderful memories of one of the funniest people I've ever met, who led a life well lived will be comforting. Bea & I shared wonderful stories and laughs from the past that included sitting around Bea & Gord's kitchen table, making cassette tapes to send back to Ontario. As we go through life, we cross paths with many people, some have an impact, some don't. I feel truly blessed to have crossed paths with Wayne, who left an indelible mark on my life. Wayne taught me at an young age that laughter is the best medicine. I still follow that advice all these years later.
My heart is with you all at this time of immeasurable grief,
