William Shuford Obituary

Published by Dallas Morning News from Nov. 18 to Nov. 19, 2020.
SHUFORD, William William Carroll Shuford, Jr. passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020 in a house fire at Cedar Creek Lake. Born February 28, 1951 to William C. Shuford, Sr. and Alice Hamrick Shuford in New Orleans, La. Bill and his family, including younger brother, Scott, lived in Nashville, Tn, for a short time before moving to Dallas. Bill attended Highland Park High School and The University of Texas at Austin where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Texas Cowboys. Shortly after graduation, he began a career in the insurance business; however, a fortuitous conversation with his dad led to a job opportunity in the North Sea with Sedco and launched his career in oil and gas industry. After several years working offshore, Bill returned to Texas. Following a stint at US Operating, Inc., he and his Dad formed WCS Oil & Gas Corp., an independent oil and gas exploration company along with his longtime business partner and friend, Bruce Stensrud. With offices in Dallas and Giddings, the partnership flourished, and Bill and Bruce were proud to consider all of their colleagues as both family and friends. Bill was a member of Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas Country Club, a board member of Inwood National Bank and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. Bill is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathy Little Shuford, their four children and their families: Elizabeth Conroy (Brian), Emily Isom (Isaac), Sarah Oliver (Boyd), William Shuford, III (Katelyn); grandchildren Emma Kate, Claire and Meredith Conroy, Henry Keller, Skylar and Charlie Mae Isom, Bo and Emily Oliver and Briar Shuford. He is also survived by his brother, Scott Shuford, his wife Kathi, and his nieces and their families: Adriane Crosland (Andy), Lauren Laughry (Josh), Caroline Smith (Crawford) and Mary Pyzik (George). He is preceded in death by his parents. Bill was the consummate family patriarch. His pride and joy were his children and their children. His favorite times were spent with his close-knit family - traveling to Sea Island, overseas boat trips, weekends at the lake, watching football and golf with his sons in laws and buddies, cooking family meals, and Sunday nights at Mi Cocina. "Trip Daddy" always made every adventure unforgettable. In addition to his family, Bill's love of friends was larger than life. He loved fiercely, loved well and loved BIG! There was no better friend than Bill and everyone has a "Bill Shuford" story. He was grateful to have so many friends and felt fortunate to be loved by so many. He had the the ability to connect with all age groups. He truly was a legend in his own time and a hero to many. Everyone knew they could count on him to do whatever could possibly be needed, and he blessed many people with silent acts of kindness behind the scenes. Bill had a passion for music and reminisced about his college band, Sons of Minerva. He was passionate about country music and enjoyed his often-noted resemblance to George Strait. Bill enjoyed his Monday lunches, golf outings, and especially his Brook Hollow gin-playing buddies. He will further be remembered for his iconic ice chest filled with crushed ice, his Styrofoam cup filled with "brown water" - either Dr. Pepper or Dewars, his hoodies, his chapstick, his witty sayings, but most importantly his strong faith in God. "Big Daddy" will be greatly missed by so many. We thank God for our time together and for all the life lessons he taught us by his steadfast example of faith, strength, courage support and love. Bill's father in law, the Reverend William Joseph Ambrose Power will officiate a private family memorial service on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 11:00 a.m. Live streaming will be available. If so inclined, please make memorial tributes to the charity near and dear to his heart: Salesmanship Club of Dallas, https://donations.momentousinstitute.org

On behalf of myself and a whole Celebration Restaurant family we send our heartfelt condolences to Bill’s family and friends. We have lost one of the truly “good guys”.
Bill was a friend and classmate of our founder Ed Lowe and one of the first to reach out in support upon Ed’s passing two years ago. He was a great supporter of our business but more importantly he cared about our people. He would always ask how my family was doing. I think this was a direct reflection of the love he had for his family and friends.
I will miss Bill’s visits to the restaurant but take solace from and greatly treasure the time we spent together. I am a better person for having known him.
With all our love,
Jon Radke

Much love and blessings to the Shuford family. I went to Waldemar with Sarah, Emily and Elizabeth when we were younger, and I will always remember how Mr. Shuford would be decked out in orange, green and purple to support each of his girls’s tribes. I also remember him being so funny!! I wish you all well and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

Bill was my mom's boss. I met Bill while helping out at WCS with the JIB many years ago. He had his Dr. Pepper and a smile on his face. I also had the privilege of seeing him again at the Byron Nelson tournament several years ago as well. He had a Dr. Pepper and a smile on his face. Bill was a kind, gentle soul that was an instant friend. My mom, LaVelle, always had nice things to say about Bill and she loved him like family. I grieve today that such a sweet, loving man was taken from this Earth, but I rejoice that he is with our Lord and Savior. May God give you peace and comfort during this most difficult time in your life. The days ahead will be so hard but precious memories will help fill that void. May God bless the Shuford family and all his friends.

Nancy and I are shocked and heartbroken by Bill's passing. Everyone who knew Bill has stories and memories that will last a lifetime. I first met him 41 years ago and thought he was the coolest person I'd ever met. Still think so. Truly, a great guy who just drew people into his universe. Loved by all. May God bless him, Kathy and their entire family.

I was fortunate to have been a part of Bill's college life, particularly at the SAE house. He was consistently positive, upbeat and happy. Bill was always fun to be with. Someone everyone wanted to be with. He was clearly destined to be a great husband, father, grandfather, community leader and business man. He was taken much too soon and will be missed by all who knew him. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the entire Shuford family. Peace be with you.

Kathy and family,
You made me a part of the UT/SAE/HP gang from the very first time I met you! I’ll never forget many travels, parties, laughs, dinners, etc. What fun we all had! I can’t remember name of the song, but he played it for us (over and over!) on one of our trips to Acapulco...about living each day as your last. I believe he did just that, to the very end. My heart aches for you, Kathy, and the kids (Shout out to my sweet Emily-love you, girl!) Shufords have always been a fine family, one that most people can only dream. I know Bill is in heaven with our Lord now, but all will surely miss him here on earth. My thoughts and continuous prayers are with you, Kathy, and the rest of the Shuford clan. May you have Gods peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding. Love to you all!

My love and support to the entire Shuford family during your time of grief and for always. My life was forever touched by this wonderful family, and Bill - who always met and spoke to you eye to eye, and no one who crossed his path ever felt unimportant. Bill had a way of making you feel like whatever the discussion, your point of view was never a small matter to him. The loss of this man is felt by every single person who had the pleasure of meeting him. I will miss him. Love to you all.

I remember those days in high school when he and his buddies practiced their band acumen in the "back house" of his parents house on Rosedale. I grew up with William living two houses away and loved him and his family. I am SO saddened with his very untimely death. I have nothing but really fun memories of both him and his family. I grieve with you all. Love, Betsy Wagner Summers

So sorry to hear about William. He and I were friends way back in the 60's.
I remember him as seemingly filled with joy and never discouraged about anything. I'm sure that's one of the ways that he would like to be thought of by family and friends.

Growing up and seeing the Shuford family on a weekly basis and then growing apart as adults and living in different places has made this news hit hard. My heart goes out to William's family. His brother and my childhood friend, Scott Shuford and Scott's family. I am just so sorry for this loss. My heart is heavy for all who loved William. I will remember him.

I lost contact with Bill after college, but I was moved reading his obituary and not surprised that he became such a successful business man, father, husband and friend.I am so sorry that he has been lost to our world before his time of giving to others had ended. I can tell from his obituary, and from my remembrance of him as a fraternity brother that he was a True Gentleman in the spirit of the creed of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.Phi Alpha,Bill....Jim Shawn
