Edwin M. Bigda, 91, of Michigan City passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Rittenhouse in Michigan City.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Root Funeral Home with Deacon Michael Greene officiating. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Saint Stanuslaus Cemetery. Viewing was held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Root Funeral Home.
Ed was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Racine, Wisconsin, to Martin and Josephine (Madura) Bigda.
On Aug. 27, 1956, in Michigan City he married Elizabeth (Luce) Bigda, who passed away on Dec. 4, 2019.
Surviving is one daughter, Anne Black; two sons, Michael and Stephen Bigda; two grandchildren, Michael and Matthew (Amanda) Black; two great-grandchildren, Vincent and Sophia Black; one sister, Dorothy Skowron; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; grandson, Major (Retired) Gregory T. Black; and siblings, Laura Pietrucha, Anastasia Siuda, Florian Bigda, Veronica Schroder, Chester Bigda, Louise Wagoner and Loretta Hylka.
Ed was a retired Michigan City Police officer with 22 years of service to his department. After retirement he worked for Saint Anthony Hospital for 32 years, retiring as their director of security.
He was a proud veteran honorably discharged as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Tank Command. He was a life time member of Queen of All Saints Church. He was five time president of the Dunes F.O.P. in Michigan City, past president of the Michigan City Common Council, past president of the Saint Joseph Young Men's Society, a member of the Skwiat American Legion Post 451; secretary of the Michigan City Police Pension Board and served for many years on the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission in Michigan City. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Anne, Mike and Steve, so sorry to hear this. I will always remember how proud he was to be a member of the police here in MC and always felt safe on Woodrow street knowing he was living close. He is now with his loving wife so fly high Mr Bigda, you did us proud

We were officers together on MCPD, and enjoyed basketball with the FOP. Ed was a good man.
