Harold was born on May 26, 1947, in La Porte, Indiana, to Harold Allen Bennitt Sr. and Helen M. (Martensen) Bennitt.
He passed away on Nov. 14, 2023, in Palm Bay, Florida, at home with his daughter, Michele; and son-in-law, Dan, by his side.
In 1966, Harold graduated from Rolling Prairie High School, where he played football for four years. After graduating high school, he attended Sam's Technical Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. There he majored in drafting, graduating in 1968. He joined local 172 Plumbers and Pipefitters. While living in La Porte, he worked for Dye Mechanical and ran Comfort Control. He was Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in La Porte. He was also a member of the La Porte Yacht Club.
After retiring, Harold moved to Palm Bay, Florida, where he enjoyed playing golf. He was so proud when he got his chef's license. He really loved to BBQ. He worked as an outside chef at his friend's restaurant. He enjoyed flipping his burgers and his specialty was prime rib. For breakfast, he made a mean eggs Benedict.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Michele (Dan) Troche; sister, Judy (the late Ron) Harenza; nieces, Dana Ehrich and Tara Harenza; and nephews, Darrin Eigenmann and John Harenza.
Harold is preceded in death by both parents, Harold and Helen; sister, Thelma Eigenmann; and both sets of grandparents.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.
A memorial service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to La Porte County Animal Shelter or American Cancer Society.
Florida arrangements are being handled by Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Home, Palm Bay, Florida. Local arrangements are being handled by Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte, Indiana.
