Steven Anthony "Dab" Dabney Sr., a cherished father, partner, brother, and friend, passed away in an untimely accident on May 19, 2024, in La Porte, Indiana, just days shy of his 59th birthday. Born in Michigan City on May 25, 1965, to Virgil Kyles and Mary L. Dabney, Steve's vibrant spirit and infectious smile touched many lives in La Porte County.
Steve, or "Dab" as he was affectionately known by friends, was a proud graduate of Elston Isaac High School's class of 1983. His passion for sports was evident early on as he excelled in football and track during his freshman year, and continued to showcase his talents on the basketball court throughout high school. His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life, with a particular fondness for the Lakers, 49ers, and the legendary players Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
After high school, Steve channeled his love for the outdoors into a successful career as the owner of "Dab-a-Do BBQ", landscaper and lawn care specialist. His work not only beautified the community but also reflected his dedication to nurturing growth and life. Steve's commitment to his faith was as enduring as his work ethic; he was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of Dr. Stanley Mason and Rev. James Lane.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and home-boy, Vernon Payne.
Steve's life was enriched by his significant other, Anna "Cookie" Thomas, and their blended family. He was to Jamel Dabney, Steven A. Dabney Jr. and Jada Dabney, and a loving figure to his bonus children, Summer Woodard, Santrella Anderson, Taleigha Thomas and Tierra Thomas. His siblings, Carla Dabney-Mock, Annette Dabney and Bryant Dabney, will remember him for his protective nature and unyielding support. He leaves behind a legacy to his grandchildren, Ta'Paris, Malik, Major, Roshanda and JaMya Dabney. He was a man who valued family above all else, and his relationships with his special aunts Dell White, Pauline Lawhorn and Nora Brown; nieces, Ashlee "Boop" Murry, Jasmine "Moopee Dopa" Dabney and Sierra Dabney; nephews, Shereff Knight and DreShawan Dabney; as well as his close-homeboys James Hurt, Brian Simmons, Steven Lawhorn, Keith Burks, Kevin Burks and John "Dixie" Payne were a testament to the depth of his connections.
Steve's life was one of engagement and enjoyment. He was known for his culinary skills, particularly at family gatherings where his dishes were always a hit. His ability to swim with grace and strength was admired by many, and his presence at any sports event was a guarantee for vibrant commentary and laughter.
The loss of Steven "Dab" Dabney Sr. will be felt deeply by all who knew him. He was a man who embraced life with enthusiasm and love, and his memory will continue to inspire those left behind. His passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the impact one person can have on a community. Steve's spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and all who were fortunate enough to experience his warmth and generosity.
In keeping with Steve's love for life and his community, his family will honor him in a celebration of life ceremony that reflects the joy he brought to the world. His departure from this earth was too soon, but the memories he created will be treasured forever. Rest in peace, Steve. Your legacy of love, laughter and strength endures.

Me my twin and Dab were inseparable In family love, brotherhood and loyalty. I believe God had a purpose for me even being in deep conversations as I was in town for another matter and while there decided to go live with Cookie and Steve while I was in IN. Me and cuz talked deeply every night since about the tenth on May. That Saturday night and Sunday morning our conversations where particularly deep and very Spiritual as I was departing bk to WI that Monday. Dab was dealing t with things in his life as was I and we shared with each other, we talked that morning but I only could see how deep our talks where in hindsight of his passing.... Certain things stand out as I reflect... Like that last Saturday as we where talking and crying I couldn´t help noticing that my aunt Mary´s picture waving on his wall kept demanding my attention at the time I didn´t know the history of the picture whether she was waving hello or goodbye??? But now I believe that that was Aunties way of sharing with me that my beloved cousin/brother was going bye & bye to be with her and all the others that have gone on m. My dear cousin is fine. My only regret is that I didn´t have the capacity to know or do anything beyond what I was able.... And I wasn´t suppose too. So as many have said cliche your love one´s tight cause you never know when Gods grace for this life will be required of them or you.
