THOMAS FERGUSON Obituary

DR. THOMAS FERGUSON JR. Dr. Thomas C. "Tom" Ferguson Jr., of Las Vegas, passed away Aug. 29, 2013. Tom was born June 22, 1932, in Smiths Grove, Ky. He received his bachelor of music education in June 1954. In January 1956, he received his master of music in theory from the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. He served two years in the U.S. Army, where he taught theory, conducting and arranging in the Army Band Master program on the faculty of the U.S. Naval School of Music. After his discharge, he played professionally with big bands as pianist and arranger until he accepted the position of director of bands at Memphis State University (University of Memphis) in August 1960. He was promoted to full professor in 1971 after receiving his doctor of philosophy in music theory from the Eastman School of Music. Tom left Memphis in 1978 and became professor of music and director of jazz studies at Arizona State University, where he remained until May 1981. He left teaching and moved to Las Vegas to pursue a career as a professional musician. He was the pianist at several strip hotels, including Caesar's Palace, Bally's and the Las Vegas Hilton. He has played in Europe, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Australia, and Japan. He appeared on Jazz at the Four Queens Hotel for a number of years with numerous artists including Lou Tabakin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Carl Fontana, Joe Henderson, Louis Bellson, and dozens of others. In September 1988, Tom returned to teaching at the College of Southern Nevada, serving as coordinator of music, chair of the Fine Arts Department, and chair of the Performing Arts Department until his retirement in June 2008. During this period, he also spent seven years as pianist/conductor at the Las Vegas Hilton. Tom served as president of the International Association of Jazz Educators (1976-1978) and was appointed to the Jazz Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976, serving a four year term. He continued to perform and tour until he suffered a stroke in January 2010. He was lovingly cared for by Terry Cepeda during the two years prior to his death. One of his greatest joys was travel, and he visited every continent except Antarctica. He is survived by his wife, Trude McMahan; daughters, Shari Paris and Terry Shade; sons-in-law, Dean Paris and Scott Shade; grandchildren, Lauren, Christine and Brad Paris and Daniel and Molly Shade; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and John Seltzer; nephews, Jeff and Kevin Seltzer; and his dog, Evan. A celebration of Tom's life will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at University United Methodist Church, 4412 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas. A scholarship is being established in Tom's name for music students at the College of Southern Nevada and donations are welcome in lieu of flowers.

Always appreciated "Doc" for allowing me to enroll late in his music theory course at (then) CCSN; one of the significant turning points in my academic life. I actually came to "enjoy" the sometimes tedious and time-consuming study of music theory, and I'd willingly present my subsequent MA in musicology as evidence!

An able, patient and witty instructor; somewhere around here is a list of "Doc-isms" compiled by my cohorts during the 4-semesters of music theory under Doc, ca. 1993-95. Sad to learn he is gone.

Tom was a great musician, weather as conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the "Mighty Sound of the South" marching band, or playing piano with Cliff Acred on bass in Memphis. It was my privilege to have played under his direction, and to have learned more than I can say under his tutelage. Rest in Peace, Tommy!

My thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family. I just learned today about his passing.
I transferred from Miss. State University to Memphis State in 1963 and
was fortunate enough to have played in the MSU marching and concert bands under Tom's direction. I admired him for his astute knowledge of music in all its forms, but especially jazz. I played trombone in the B stage band at MSU and enjoyed playing big band music of the 30s and 40s, with some new arrangements by Tom. He was a top notch jazz pianist and I think of him from time to time when I sit down at my keyboard. Well, I left MSU after the first semester and joined the Air Force, but I remember that Tom tried to talk me into staying in school and he told me that he wanted me to play in the A stage band the next semester, which made me feel pretty good. I miss his energy and easy going personality.
He was a great band director and jazz musician.

There were many things that happened while Tom was at MSU; I had been teaching at Hillcrest H,S.for several years and doing some graduate work at MSU. Tom's influence on my direction will be remembered forever.
Perfect timing for Memphis to have his talent.
Love to his family.

I was a member of the Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) Flag Corps with The Mighty Sound of the South, directed by Dr. Ferguson, in '74-'75. He was a wonderful leader; all of us band members loved him! God have mercy on his soul!

Sorry I couldn't be there today to honor Tom. He was a patient at our dental office and we all enjoyed seeing him every appointment! We were sadden when it was no longer possible for Tom to make the trek across town for his appointments. He was so dedicated.Tom always had a smile for us and we will continue to miss seeing him.

I will remember Tom as a colleague and my department chair. I commend him for his contribution to the College of Southern Nevada. For many years the Department of Fine Arts flourished under his leadership.
