Dean Byron Hustad
Aug. 23, 1947 - Aug. 8, 2023
LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA - Dean Byron Hustad, age 75, died on August 8, 2023, at home in Laguna Niguel, CA, after battling cancer.
Dean was a native of Madison, WI. He grew up in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood, attended Madison East High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Finance. In 1977, he met his wife, Barbara, and they were together till his death. Dean worked for (then) Burroughs Corporation, selling computer systems within the finance industry. In 1985, his career path led him to Laguna Niguel, CA, where he continued a successful career until his retirement in 2010.
Dean loved sailing, windsurfing and biking, riding his bike to Laguna Beach every Sunday until age 74. He loved all things "Wisconsin" and never failed to cheer for the Badgers. Dean and his beloved lab, Buddy, were familiar figures at Dana Point Harbor, making friends with anyone who had a dog cookie.
In retirement Dean and Barbara enjoyed traveling, dividing their travels between Europe, tropical locations, and a yearly trip to their favorite place on earth, Crested Butte, CO.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Florence; his brother, Dick; his sisters: Nancy and Jean; his nephew, Dan and Buddy. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (nee Bloedorn) Hustad; his sister-in-law, Janet Hustad; his niece, Sheri Hustad Ebert; and a great variety of friends in Wisconsin and California.

I knew Dean for a few years in the mid-1970's when he worked for Metropolitan Nat'l Bank (Monona, WI). I was just part-time still going to school, while Dean was a couple of years older and the cashier of the bank. Dean was always great fun to be with. My fondest memory is that one Saturday, he took my wife, Sue, and I sailing on Lake Mendota. As luck would have it, the wind died, and we were drifting aimlessly. I suggested to Dean that we should get a tow to shore by a power boat. I don't recall his exact words, but it was something along the lines of, "I'll throw you overboard, before I hail a motor boat." I think his actual words may have been a bit more colorful.
RIP, my friend.

Dean became a wonderful friend of mine over the last 15 years. He would ride his bike to my restaurant, the Cliff, in Laguna Beach, and sit in my station every Saturday morning. Whether it was Green Bay Packers or Wisconsin Badger sports, or his most recent trip to Colorado, I would always love my morning conversations with Dean. We would share pictures of our vacations and talk about our favorite IPAs. He was a very kind and gentle soul, always smiling, always interested in my life, and I will miss him very much. I never got to say good bye, so , Dean , my friend, you were loved by me and the the friends you made here at the Cliff. May you rest in peace.

I worked with Dean for many years at Burroughs. Dean was always a joy to be around and a very funny guy. I sailed with Dean many times and had more than a few beers with him at the Country Mill. I will always consider him a friend. His stories of life were always amazing. Rest in peace till we meet again.

I can think of few people who made me laugh more than Dean Hustad. His words, facial expressions and gestures were priceless---I miss him already. I will always remember how easy it was for Dean to make new friends and connect with people and dogs. Enjoy the journey you are currently on Dean, and I hope you'll stop by for a visit now and then--We'll leave the light on for you. Your friend, Howard (Howie) Olson.
