George Beattie Obituary

George Edward
Beattie, 62
PORTLAND -- George Edward Beattie, 62, of Scarborough, passed away on Nov. 28, 2013. He was born on Oct. 19, 1951, at Langley A.F.B, Va.
George was known by many names, but to me he was 'Dad.' He will be missed not only by the family he leaves behind, but also by the many people whose lives he touched.
His brother Jim and his childhood friends will remember George as a good-natured guy who was always willing to go out and play.
His many teammates and opponents will remember 'Zelmo' as a fierce competitor, but one who loved to play the game, be it baseball, basketball, football, or golf.
The countless kids he coached throughout the years will remember 'Coach Beattie' as patient and passionate. He loved to impart his knowledge to the kids he coached and he truly cared about each and every one of them.
His golfing buddies at Nonesuch will remember the 'Commissioner' for his outgoing manner and his ability to make everyone feel welcome.
His coworkers will remember George for his positive outlook, his ever-present smile and his helpful nature.
My mother and I will remember him for so many reasons. He loved spending time with his family and watching me grow up and start my own family. His greatest joy these last 15 months was spending time with his granddaughter Leah.
When anyone remembers my Dad, they will remember how kind and generous he was.
Please come help us remember 'Dad,' 'Zelmo,' 'Coach' and 'the Commish' and celebrate his life this Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1-4 p.m., at Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard. We will have a final '19th Hole' to honor his life and his contributions to the communities in which he lived. So sudden and so sad; George will be missed by so many. Thoughts of him will bring to mind kindness, helpfulness, and an ever present smile. My favorite memory is of him helping fallen victims on ski slopes and retrieving an errant glove, ski, or pole, while always looking well dressed in new outfits and skis. Our memories of George will bring smiles to all of us for many years to come.

Jim, I'm truly saddened hearing George has passed. I feel truly blessed that having not seeing him in probably 40 years and that I had run into him at Nonesuch three years ago and he said Pattie Meehan and I said George Beattie, I was so happy we both crossed paths again and recognized one another. I think back and remember our good old day's at Calvary Church and little league games. Someday we will cross paths again in God's Kingdom. May George rest in eternal peace. Again, my deepest sympathy for you and family. Tommy is up there with his Lanos baseball suite on waiting for George in his VFW baseball suite

George Beattie was my freshman baseball coach many years ago. I remember that we weren't a very good team, but Coach Beattie believed in us. He was more passionate than any coach I've ever encountered. At that age, when the game started to get competitive, to have someone that would fight tooth and nail to defend us meant more than he will ever know. In my mind, there will never be anyone quite like him.

I was introduced to 'the commissioner' by my dad, who is part of the weekend golf group at Nonesuch. He made me feel like I had known him my entire life. I have an endless supply of pink and purple golf balls because he was always collecting them for me in the woods. He was a such a wonderful man and I will truly miss seeing him on summer days at the golf course.
