Dear Dave, Judy, and family, Our family sends deepest condolences. I literally broke into tears when I heard about Ed´s passing. I´ll never forget meeting him for the very first time. We had just move to PA from FL and my girls were desperately unhappy to have to leave all our family behind. Alicia was especially so because she was having to enter middle school without the support of all her childhood friends. We were sitting in the office at Springhouse waiting to get her registered when Mr Whitby entered the room. He gave us a very congenial "Good morning! How are you doing today?" But he immediately noticed the expression on her face and realized he hadn´t seen this student before. "Oh! You must be a new kid. In that case I´m sure it´s not the best of days. What´s your name?" And on he went with infinite kindness and a warm welcome to her new school. Even if that had been the only time we met, I will never forget his extreme kindness and compassion that very difficult day. Over the years we were also blessed to know Ed, Judy, and family through our church as well. His positive attitude, twinkle in his eye and sense of humor always made an encounter with him a joy. One of my dearest memories of Ed was when he went along as a chaperone on a Spring Break trip to Spain with our daughter and group of students, many going out of the country for the very first time. They were going to be away over Easter so another mom and I asked him if he´d be our Easter Bunny. We sent him along a headband with bunny ears and a bag of candy. I understand he was a major hit when he came hopping down the aisle on their bus! There are other stories but I´ll stop there. Ed had such a spirit of generosity and fun. He walked the talk and was a great gift to the Garcia family. The world was a much better place because of his time in it. Hugs to all of you. Lorrie Garcia

Sending healing prayers and comfort during this tough time. Mr. Whitby was truly an amazing man. One of my fondest memories I have from Springhouse (in the late 70's) was when he covered for our gymnastics coach at a meet against Raub middle school. We were all so nervous but he reassured us that everything was going to be just fine. I threw my first front handspring on the vault that day. He was right there jumping and clapping. What a true inspiration he was.

There are rare individuals who stand out as truly one of a kind, leaving an indelible mark on everyone they encounter. Mr Whitby was undeniably one of those wonderful souls. His sternness and toughness were always balanced by a deep sense of compassion, and his very presence exuded warmth and kindness. He possessed a remarkable ability to truly understand his students, which was so appreciated during those formative years. I know I speak for thousands when I say the major impact he had on each of us will forever be a cherished and enduring memory. My heartfelt condolences go out to his entire family. Mr Whitby, thank you. We will get together for that beer we talked about ... just not yet.

Mr. Whitby was the Assistant Principal as I went through Springfield Jr. High School. I "visited" him in his office many more times that I should have. He was always a very fair and respected disciplinarian and helped me get my act together before I moved on to High School, where my Dad (Jerome Pail) would be the one I would have to visit if going outside the lines during school (which I did not, even once, although their was a close call with a miniature water gun in Spanish class...).
While any life ending is a heartbreaking event, Mr. Whitby's legacy will live on in the countless students whose lives he has touched and guided.
Thank you Mr. Whitby for caring so deeply for your students.

I will always remember Mr. Whitby as a good man. I met him as a student at Springhouse. Mr. Whitby took a genuine interest in his students lives and treated all with fairness. He was stern when necessary but he could just as easily kid with anyone. His steadfastness helped me through a particularly difficult time and I'll always be grateful for his kindness and compassion. He was truly one of a kind. God bless you, Mr. Whitby. Rest in peace good and faithful servant. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Adding to the many remembrances of Mr. Whitby. He was such a positive, funny, fun presence at Springhouse. He sets a very high bar for all educators. He touched so many and helped us all navigate through what are some of the trickiest years where we were each finding our unique paths in life. He made us each feel special, listened, and truly saw us as people. He was a real gift.
For his family, I share my deepest condolences. May he live forever in your hearts and in the hearts of all those who he touched in his life.

Condolences to your family on Mr. Whitby´s passing. As all of these comments attest, his was a life well lived, with a huge impact on so many people. What an amazing legacy. My childhood memories don´t seem to be as good as many others, so the fact that I do remember connecting with Mr. Whitby- and in the best of ways - says much about him. I am happy to have caught up with him in the recent past and sad I won´t see him again. Sending wishes of comfort and peace to all who loved Mr. Whitby.

Mr. Whitby was a wonderful person, and the best Assistant Principal a school could have - we were very lucky to have him at Springhouse!
He knew how to charm the students, be accessible and was ALWAYS willing to listen to us. I´ll never forget dancing with him at our "Desperate But Not Serious" (he enjoyed Adam Ant) Valentine´s Day dance in 1978, he was a crack-up!
He also lived in my neighborhood, and when his son with the paper route was sick, he would deliver them!
He was so cool, and will be missed!

What a positive presence he had in my life and others at PHS. Mr. Whitby had an uncanny ability to respect and understand you (even at a young age) and how you needed to be treated to bring out the best in you. He left an indelible impression upon me that I carried throughout life. He taught me it´s best to listen and offer a positive perspective to your peers, friends, family and acquaintances. He was always my favorite teacher. 23 yrs later, my daughter attended Springhouse .She enjoyed his teaching as much as I did and has shared her memory. Mr Whitby enlisted my husband and I to chaperone the first dance of the year. Later, I would run into him @ Wegmans over the yrs and would always leave our impromptu meetings with a smile. I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Whitby´s passing. My family and I have a long memorable history with him. He was an amazing AP for me and my two older brothers- for years after we all "grew up," whenever either my mother or I ran into Mr. Whitby (Target, restaurant), he recognized and remembered us right away. I am a teacher; one year I taught a student with the last name of "Whitby." Upon meeting him I said, "Wait a second... like THE Whitby? Ed Whitby?!?" Clearly the young man was used to being recognized and he smiled and confirmed it. I told him it was an honor to have a Whitby as a student. Later, a different Whitby grandchild was a student teacher at my school. The same scenario ensued, the young man smiled when I said "Mr. Whitby is a legend!" I believe this same gentleman (who was once a student teacher) is now a teacher and I have run into him with the same reaction - I just can´t hide my admiration for Mr. Whitby. Last week I was just telling my own young kids a story about him and we all laughed. Mr. Whitby was absolutely a legend. Thank you, G-d, for sharing him with us. Condolences to the family. Sincerely, Ali Brooks

Well, I have to say that I feel like I spent a good part of my life with my former assistant principal from Springhouse, PHS, & then LCCC. I would later run into you at grocery stores until at least 3-4(?) years ago. I remember the day I brought my skateboard to Springhouse and Mr. Whitby said, "I know what you have in that bag" and he didn't confiscate it b/c I was a good kid! Then, the one hall monitor tried to get me in trouble for getting a soda, when my science teacher gave the ok and all was good in PHS. I was just thinking of Mr. Whitby within the last few weeks and how I hadn't run into him and his wife for a while.
Mrs. Whitby, I ran into both of you in the parking lot of Weis on N. Cedar Crest a few(?) years ago and started knocking on the driver's side window. Of course, I always had to say hi & give your husband a hug when we saw each other!
I have been in ASD since 2007, when I met your son, David the following year at Muhlenberg. When I saw the last name, I asked, are you related to Mr. Whitby from Parkland. I think I recall David being shocked or he started to laugh b/c he wasn't expecting that response.
When I graduated high school, I ended up at LCCC for a few years, where I re-connected with Mr. Whitby after high school. I know I went to that office a few times just so we could talk and laugh. It was so great to reconnect in my early college days.
My thoughts & prayers are with you all! May Mr. Whitby rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Beth Burke
