Dr Jeffrey LaBarrett

January 8, 2006

This short memorial is to one of the most articulate and exciting people I have ever known. He was "uncle Earl" to my brother and I, and his rich and earnest devotion to education and honesty was very apparent, and very early in my life.

Fond memories exude from my thoughts as I can see him standing at the doors to our church 'fellowship hall' making sure at Christmas that every child received their box of chocolated crushed peanuts and tasty chocolate covered crackers. In spring, he insisted on personally awarding each of us our pins for perfect Sunday school attendance in the previous year, and it was a thrill to watch his talented hands create colorful chalk 'stories' about the Bible and the young and old characters of Jesus, Rebecca, David, Joseph and Moses.

Earl was truly a mentor and model for all youth, whether of family, church or the community. For many years he saw to the needs and educational purpose of many communities, demonstrating and selling World Book Encyclopedias. Amazingly, and when visiting on a family Friday or Saturday evening, I think he had his greatest fun laughing, joking and interacting with us, the kids, and going through the 'Lookies' or other geographic or historic wonders.

Most of all, I remember and to this day grow, my profound love and understanding of music, and the 'education' that started in the living room of "Earl" Sleep. I was usually into everything on a visit, but on one particular evening, I was given the "assignment" of listening to several pieces of different music. Among those pieces were my first listenings of Beethovens 5th Symphony, several sonatas by Chopin, and for 'dessert', goofy songs by the Smothers Brothers, and the recorded comedy of Bill Dana!

Earl, With the Love that you modeled and offered as an adult, I now tenderly think of you as probably one of the reasons why I find great peace in bringing education to children of special needs. All my love, Jeffrey
