Thomas Davis Obituary

Davis, Dr. Thomas L.Dr. Thomas L. Davis died peacefully on March 17, 2014 surrounded by loving family and friends. Born July 22, 1922, he was part of a generation described by journalist Tom Brokaw as "the greatest generation." While known for his love of family, loyalty to friends, pride in his country, commitment to his profession and compassion towards others, he would prefer to be remembered as a man of God. He was a devout Christian and avid reader, the combination of which resulted, possibly, in the most highlighted Bible in history. Born and raised in Lansford, PA, Tom was proud of his beloved coal regions. After graduating from Lansford High School and Muhlenberg College, he completed his first year of dental school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country in World War II. Although eligible for an elevated commission of second lieutenant, he enlisted at a lower rank to be with his home town buddies. As a technician in the Medical Detachment 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, he served four years in the South Pacific and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged in 1946.While completing his studies at Temple University School of Dentistry, where he was awarded a Doctorate of Dental Surgery, he met his beloved wife, H. Elizabeth ("Betty") (Bengtson) Davis, on a blind date. They were married six weeks later. It was a beautiful, loving marriage, which they often described as, "We have it all, just like Bogey and Bacall." They resided in the Lehigh Valley, where Tom opened a private practice, and built a summer home on Lake Harmony in the Poconos. It was there that he enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was water skiing, snow skiing, boating, hiking, camping, scouting activities or simply relaxing by the lake. With the intention of "giving back," Tom retired from a successful private practice to work at White Haven Center. He drew enormous gratification from providing restorative dental care to the residents, many of whom suffered from profound physical and mental disabilities. His fondness for the residents was mutual, with many of them congregating in his office on a daily basis just to be near him or to catch an occasional hug.Tom was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Allentown, PA, Masonic Lodge 733 (Minsi Lodge), Irem Temple, American Dental Association, National Ski Patrol and Lake Harmony Rescue Squad and Ambulance Corps. Survivors: He was predeceased by his wife, Betty, and parents, Claude and Mary (Pollock) Davis of Lansford, PA. He is survived by his son Thomas L. Davis and his wife, Lynn, of Coopersburg, his son Dr. Jonathan B. Davis and his wife, Jenny of Monrovia, MD, his daughter Nancy E. Davis, Esquire and her husband Joseph Warner Butler, III of Gloucester, MA, his grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew and Michael and his devoted and loving friend, Mary Studenich of Allentown. Services: Services: A viewing will be held Saturday, March 22 from 9am until 10:30am at the church, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial with military honors will be at Sky View Memorial Park in Hometown, Pa. Address: Grace United Church of Christ, 623 Cleveland St, Allentown, Pa. Arrangements by Trexler Funeral Home, Inc., Allentown, PA. www.trexlerfuneralhome.com Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace United Church of Christ and Fellowship Manor, 3000 Fellowship Drive, Whitehall, PA 18052. Tom, Jon and Nancy - My deepest sympathies on the lose of Big Tom as my family always called him. I worked for him, got drilled by him, and listened to many a band on the porch at the lake. May you find warmth from family and friends during this difficult time. He was a good man that meant a lot to all in our family.

Dear Family, I was so sorry to read of Tom's passing. I remember Tom as recommending my dentists, peridontists, etc when I came to Allentown. As I read his obituary I did remember the rest of his life as I came to know him as a great friend of my father Bill McDonald. I say "great friend" because my fondest memory of him is when he visited my father because he knew that my father only had days to live. Not many people do that. But that was your father. I do remember him as a kind, thoughtful, man of God who lived out his faith. And there is no doubt in my mind that when he got to Heaven his God said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Dear tom, Jonathan, Nancy and Family,

I was so sorry to learn of your father's passing, although I know that these last few years brought ill health. Your father was a wonderful man, and I was privileged to get to know him while I served as pastor at Grace UCC from 2002 to 2012. He attended church faithfully, and made a positive contribution to the world around him and the many people whose lives he touched. He spoke often of your mother, and was very proud of all of you. You can be so proud of him for a life well lived. My condolences to your family.

In Christian love,
Rev. LaVerne and Harvey Passman

I will always remember `Doc. Davis foremost, as the big-hearted Assistant Scoutmaster. Tom always made sure his 'boys' had a place in his home, or at the lake house. Never was there a dull moment when Tom was around. If he wasn't helping the scouts earn a merit badge, he was making sure that they learned waterskiing or ice fishing or some other outdoor oriented activity. With Tom's assistance, a new record was set in 1971, with 5 Boy scouts attaining the rank of Eagle scout in the same troop, at the same time. That feat earned a Recognition ceremony that included the Apollo Astronauts John Glenn, Buss Aldrin and Neil Armstong. (if I remember correctly) May Dr. Davis live long in our memories. He was loved by many, near and far.

My deepest sympathy and Christian love is extended to Tom, Jonathan, Nancy, and the entire family at this time of loss. I fondly recall your parents and our many visits and conversations while I served as their Pastor at Grace UCC, and remember officiating at Mom's funeral. Finally, they can be together again. May the peace of the Risen Christ offer you comfort and hope in the days ahead.

To the family of Mr. Davis, We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Davis. We would like to express our sincere condolences to the whole family. I have had the privilege & honor of knowing Mr. Davis when he would come with the Fellowship Manor bus to do their shopping at the Giant Food Store in Whitehall. I worked there as a cashier and every time I would see him he always had a smile on his face and always would say hello and see you next time when coming and going every time he was in the store. He was a wonderful, loving, and caring person who is now with our Lord Jesus. He is gone but will never ever be forgotten because of all the lives he touched during his time on this earth. Jesus & the guardian angels have accepted another angel on their team up in heaven to help look over the whole world. RIP Mr.Davis. Sincerely Michelle, Joseph, Robert
