Gary Benson Obituary
October 3, 1949 - August 17, 2023
Madera, California - Gary Ray Benson a.k.a "Beagle" passed away on August 17, 2023, after a lengthy illness.
Gary was born on October 3, 1949, in Merced, CA to Ray and Loretta Benson. He grew up playing baseball, joining local neighborhood teams, and then for Merced High School where he honed his pitching skills. His teammate, Gary Crisp created caricatures of some of the team members, thus earning Gary the nickname "Beagle" which is how many people would come to remember him.
After high school, Gary attended Merced College playing for the legendary Don Odishoo, and was First Team All-Conference 1970. He then transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), playing baseball, and is one of the All-Time Lettermen for the class of 1971. Eventually, he returned to Merced where he worked at Ragu for many years.
Gary was a long-time member of Club Mercedes, often helping in the kitchen on social nights and other special events.
He is survived by his sister Nancy and nephews, Bryan, Kevin, Derek, Daniel, and Craig.
Gary will be remembered for his generosity and sense of humor. A memorial gathering is planned for a future date.
