Spencer Brewster Obituary

Spencer Brewster
April 29, 2025
Spencer (Splint) Hatch Brewster, Jr. 77, of Haddam Neck passed away on April 29, 2025. Splint was beloved by his family and community of friends and neighbors. Born and raised on a family farm in Plymouth, MA, Splint had an idyllic childhood of loving parents, five sisters, many aunts, uncles and cousins and even more animals.
Following high school, Splint served two years in the U.S. Army. He went on to have an active professional life working in motorsports, both as a racer and as a mechanic for Team Honda. More recently he worked as a carpenter with The Barn Raisers where he enjoyed many years contributing to timber framing and barn raisings throughout New England.
Splint was an avid sports fan. He was passionate about his beloved UConn Women's basketball team, along with all the Boston teams. He loved golf and looked forward to his weekly outings with his Haddam Neck and Portland West friends right up until the last week of his life. He loved his community of Haddam Neck and could always be counted on to tell a great story or an even better joke. His love of dogs was legendary especially for "The Great Dog Louie." Splint enjoyed time with his large, blended family and enjoyed being a grandfather in his later years.
Splint is survived by his wife of 44 years Lydia Brewster (nee Weston), his sisters Marlee Brockmann of Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, Sarah Tompkins (Bruce) of Rowley, MA, Patience Gregg (Holland) of Skaneateles, NY and Katharyn Brewster of Plymouth, MA; his children and step children, Heidi Cooley (David) of Plymouth, MA, Samantha Holmes (Rich Kreger) of Weston, CT, Forest Yeager (Shane) of Steamboat Springs, CO, Nathaniel Holmes (Katya) of Middletown, CT, Jebediah Brewster (Michelle) of Steamboat Springs, CO, Patience Rich (Aaron) of Lyme, NH and Poppy Brewster Ward of Mullica Hill, NJ. He also leaves behind his fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren along with many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Splint was predeceased by his parents, Marietta (nee Withington) and Spencer Brewster, his sister Anne Keller and brother-in-law Javier Brockmann.
An informal gathering to celebrate Splint will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 1-3 p.m. at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds on Quarry Hill Road in Haddam Neck.
In lieu of flowers, play a round of golf or donations may be made to the Northern Middlesex YMCA or to a charity of your choice in Splint's memory.

We had a neighborly chat almost everyday. Splint was a good egg. Like everybody here in the Neck, including their labradoodle, Louie, we loved him and miss him. To the whole family, especially Lydia, we are so so sorry.

Splint was easy to like. I remember when he first came thundering down Haddam Neck Road on his motorcycle to court Lydia. And then over the years I saw him frequently at Brendan's work site or barn raisings. He always greeted me with open arms, a ready smile, and a funny or ironic tale. He made me feel special, as I suspect he did for many others. Splint had health issues over the years but he dealt with them. He worked and lived and enjoyed life. He is one of a kind. I already miss him and look forward to sharing stories about him with his large family and many friends.

My deepest condolences Lydia, et al. I first met Splint through Lydia and found him easy with a love of dogs and all things sports. We shared our love of UCONN Women's Basketball and all dogs. We spoke of golf and my handicap...also called golf, and shared many very funny jokes. I, as many others, will miss Splint who brightened days with his easy nature and infectious smile.

Oh boy, this is a tough one for me. Splint was the first person that I met in Haddam Neck quite expectedly. He was magnanimous and a warm gentleman from the get go. From there, we forged a warm relationship about all things mechanical and the art of "wrenching on stuff". Our friendship evolved to include the merging of our personal friendship with that of our families which we cherish to this day. Splint took me on as his golfing partner even though I was nowhere his equal! He was very patient with me where others would have dismissed me as a hack. I am very fortunate to have been his cart buddy for the last four years with the perfect Haddam Neck foursome! He was a solid friend and will be missed for the rest of my life.
