Stephen Balog Obituary

Stephen Nicholas Balog of Pecos passed away last Friday August 23, 3013 in McKinney, TX. He was a long time resident of Pecos, Texas. Steve was born in Michigan July 17, 1936 and was the oldest boy of three brothers and two sisters. His father Stephen F. Balog and mother Ann Balog moved the family to Odessa, Texas to start his own business: Balog Boiler Works. Steve was raised in Odessa, Texas, and attended Odessa High School. He joined the Army Branch of the military in 1956 and married Helen Faye Sanders in Odessa Texas at Belview Baptist Church in 1961. He also attended Odessa College, University of Texas at El Paso. His career includes the Odessa Police Department (1962-1969) to Deputy U. S. Marshal (1972 to 1993); he remained employed at the Lucius Bunton Federal Courthouse in Pecos until 2013 as Federal Court Security Officer. He enjoyed coin collecting, and gun collecting. He loved studying about old Texas ghost towns. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who passed in 2000; his brother, Joe Balog, and his half-brother, Christopher Balog. Steve was a loving husband and father of two, grandfather of four, and great-grandfather of one. He leaves behind his son who resides in McKinney, Texas; Steve Balog, Jr. and his wife Susan Balog, and their four children, Katie (Balog) Vargas, Andrew (Drew) Balog, Lydia and Virginia (Ginny) Balog, and a great granddaughter, Elena Vargas; along with a daughter Kim Balog who currently resides in Addison, Texas. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: John Balog of Oregon, Mike Balog of Pecos Texas, Rosetta Balog White of Odessa Texas, Carol Balog Clark of Midland Texas and his half- brothers, Johnny Balog). He had numerous great nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be 4-7 PM Friday, August 30, 2013 in Pecos in the fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church, 423 S. Hickory. Visitation in Odessa will be from noon until service time on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel in Odessa, Texas, with Kevin Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers will be William Crowe, Kevin Zimdars, William Upchurch, John Prewit, Jim Brown, Cathrin Gaida, JC White, Gerry Villalobos, Clifford Atkins, Arturo Granado, Ruben Dominquez, Jerry Byrne, and Amaro Muñoz. Pallbearers will be Billy Johnson, Phil Maxwell, Kenneth Roberts, Jay Easley, Steve Clark, Mike Balog, Robin McBride, Gary Brown, Alex Patnode. 5 years ago I helped several others start what we now call the Odessa Law Enforcement (OLE) family reunion and as soon as Steve heard about these annual gatherings, he became a regular. I am blessed to have met him and to have spent time listening to all his wonderful stories. Although he worked at OPD in the 1960's and I worked there in the 1980's we knew many of the same people. He was one of the kindest, funniest and most decent men I have ever met and my life is better for having known him. The OLE Family will never be the same. Rest in Peace Steve, you will be missed so much by so many.

What a hoot Steve was! I was a Cadet at Midland PD in 1978 when we met. He always had a funny story and uplifting spirit. I don't know how we ever made it from Midland to Pecos in 55 minutes, but we did. DPS just pulled back into the median when Steve broadcast his radio number! Thats clout, "Well done God's true and faithful servant". We will be with Steve longer than without him. Thats a promise!

Steve sat in front of us at the First Baptist Church in Pecos. It seemed that the lights came on in the church when Steve arrived. His great sense of humor will be greatly missed.

I've worked at the Federal Courthouse in Midland for 27 years. I fondly remember Steve. He and his buddy Gail Boggs kept us in stitches. He was always laughing and smiling. So sorry for your loss he was a great man!

MANY years ago, when I was with Midland PD or SO, I found myself at a table with a group from several law enforcement agencies. I couldn't tell you why we were there or even who else was there. What I can say is that Steve kept the whole table entertained. I remember being sore the next day from all the laughter! Steve was a great guy and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

Steve was a wonderful man who loved life and made everyone's day better with his sense of humor. He loved his family, his job as a Deputy U S Marshal, and his country. I treasure many memories of him but one in particular stands out. He was at my son's 4th birthday party, playing in the floor with the train. Ash looked up at me after a bit and said "Mama, when I can I play with my train?" Steve was a wonderful friend and my heart is sad for his family. Thank you for sharing him with all of us who counted him a friend.
