William Reeger Obituary

William Ronald Reeger
07/30/1943 - 08/31/2024
William Ronald Reeger, 81, of Midland (and a few other places in Texas) passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Coach Reeger's "After Game Party" (a time to receive friends) will be 6-8 pm, September 5, 2024 at 5202 Teakwood Trace in Midland. Services will be held 10:00 am, Friday, September 6, 2024 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Please wear your school or team colors, your coaching clothes or your gameday outfit!
Coach Reeger was born on July 30, 1943 in Goose Creek, Texas to Helen Mildred Rice and Luther Henry Reeger. He spent most of his early life in various Humble camps with a childhood he described fondly full of mischief, fun and adventure. He attended Merkel High School where he is honored in the Merkel High School Hall of Fame. More importantly, it is where he met his future wife, Lynda Jones, formally from Roxton, Texas. After high school, he attended Texas Tech University. He was a 4-year letterman and was voted lineman of the year his senior year. He was also the first paid graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech. More importantly, it is where he married his wife, Lynda Jones Reeger in 1965.
After Texas Tech, he went on to teach and coach high school football in New Deal (66-67), Vernon (67-68), Spring Branch (68-69), LD Bell (69-70), Petersburg twice (71-76 and 79-80), Cleburne (76-79), El Campo (80-81), Ft. Stockton (81-84), Reagan County (84-89), Alpine (89-90), Greenville (90-91), Midland High (91-94), Midland Lee (94-02), and Midland Christian (02-21). During this time, he was blessed to coach thousands of outstanding young men and coach with some of the very best coaches Texas will ever know. His favorite years coaching were coaching his son Ronn and later getting to share the sideline and coach with him. His other favorite years were coaching his 3 grandsons making a dream come true. His two State Champion 3-peats were not bad either. Really, he loved every season, day and minute he spent with the many wonderful people he shared life with.
Coach Reeger is survived by his son Ronn Reeger and wife Katherine Chandler, daughter, Laura Reeger North and husband Troy North and his 3 grandsons TD Reeger North, Hutt Reeger North (Caitlyn) and Stance Reeger North, brother Keith Reeger and wife Dana and their 3 children and families- Justin Reeger (Juana-Kaidan, Marie, Kaleb, and Addison), Luke Reeger (Jenny-Jude, Josie, and Jack) and Julie Reeger Hilliard (Spencer- Graham and Sadie), sister-in-law Ruth Reeger and daughter Ami Reeger Briscoe (Joe-Kenzie), his in-laws Jack and Linda North, Mark and Susie Chandler, and Dennis and Marlene Eads.
Coach Reeger is preceded in death by his wife and love of his life Lynda Jones Reeger. They were married in 1965 and she rarely missed a game sharing a love that is unmatched. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Mildred Reeger and his brother Gary Reeger.
There are so many players, coaches, trainers, student trainers and managers, parents, superintendents, principals, teachers, aides, janitors, counselors, office workers, librarians, band directors, lunchroom ladies, groundskeepers, sportscasters and writers and even referees that he loved like family. He always said he never worked a day in his life. We thank all of you for being a part of that amazing life!
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite: booster club, team, band, drama club, theatre, or charity of your choice. He would say take care of your kids.
Most of his players will always think of him with a "Hubba, Hubba Men" and "Good, Good, Good"!
*Those of you that were able to make the walk-through, we hope it helped!

I wasn't an athlete, and my interactions with Coach Reeger were mostly in passing; however, he was always friendly and supportive of ALL students. His constant smile, encouraging words, and positive attitude were beacons at Reagan County High School. To not have been directly impacted by his influence shows just how far-reaching his touch was, and it says a lot about his character, mission, and values as an educator. My thoughts and prayers go out to Laura his family as they learn to navigate life without him.

I am very lucky to have have had a great number of people who had such a positive influence on my life. I owe so much to so many who took the time out of their lives to lead me to be the man I am today. Coach Reeger was one of those people. He taught me how to overcome adversity. He showed me what it was like to be a leader of men. I wish I had another chance to thank him for his influence.

Thank you Coach. You will be missed, but your lessons will live on.
