Douglas Clendaniel Obituary

Douglas Brice Clendaniel was born on May 9, 1950, in Baltimore, MD and passed away peacefully on his family farm on October 2, 2025, in Chestertown, MD. His beloved sister Cynthia Clendaniel and parents Elizabeth Clendaniel Grayson and John (Jack) Brice Clendaniel and stepmother Frances predeceased him. A strong influence in his life were his grandparents, Epler and Helen Mills who lived in Virginia, Illinois. He was the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews, particularly his godson Campbell Hook. Doug spent summers during his early years in Chestertown where he learned to sail and play tennis. He was a long-standing member of Chester River Yacht and Country Club, where he played golf with many friends.

Doug received his BS in Political Science and History from Mercer University and studied for an MBA at the University of Georgia. At Mercer, he was a member of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He joined General Chemical Corp. in 1984 and retired in 2007 as Sales and Marketing Manager. As part of his work in sales and special assignment projects for General Chemical's eastern and southern regions, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he established many lifelong friends and became an avid golfer. After retiring, he enjoyed driving a school bus for Kent County Schools - "Mr. Doug" was a favorite among the students.

Doug will be remembered by his family members and many friends as a loyal companion who loved in equal measure his friends, his family, his farm, his country, his Georgia Bulldogs, his golf, and his oysters. A gentleman in every sense of the word, spending an evening with Doug talking and laughing about everything from sports, to politics, to history, to the right way to make a crab cake are memories we will all treasure.

There will be family private graveside services at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life is planned for November 29, 2025, from 2 pm - 4 pm at the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to: Chestertown Food Bank, P. O. Box 346, Chestertown, MD 21620 and Mercer University College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Annual Fund, Office of University Advancement, 1501 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA 31207, or donate online at giving.mercer.edu with a note designating the gift to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Annual Fund.
