Jon Rodney 'JR' Gibbens passed away peacefully August 13, 2025 at Chapman Valley Manor. He was born June 4, 1936 to the now late Lewis and Marjorie (Zellers) Gibbens.

He was a farm boy in Erie, PA until he left to join the Marines in 1953. He was later medically retired. He was truly one of a kind and a true jack of all trades. He spent some time as an oil rigger and rodeo bronc rider, before riding his Harley into Chapman, KS where he met and married his wife Marianna. He tried his luck as a tavern owner at one time and later as a painter, an electrician, pig farmer, and a mechanic before retiring.

His family and friends will remember him for his story telling skills, his love of old thunderbirds, his soft heart for his barn cats and little dog Augie. He was always willing to help anyone with anything.

JR is survived by his wife and life partner of 43 years Marianna, his brother Art and sister Jan, his stepchildren Jimmie and Kathy, his grandchildren Jayme, Meghan, Lori, and Logan, as well as his seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings.

He's left us with great life lessons and many colorful stories.

At JR's request a simple graveside service with honors will be 10:00, Saturday, 23 August 2025 at the Indian Hills Cemetery in Chapman. Memorials may be made to the Chapman American Legion Post 240 and may be left at the time of service or sent in care of the Londeen-Overlease Funeral Chapel PO Box 411 Chapman, Kansas 67431.
