Allan ("Al") G. Mueller, 81, of
Jefferson City, Missouri entered into eternal rest Tuesday, June 11, 2024. He was born on December 16, 1942, in
St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Aaron Barney and Theresa Marie (Schlaffer) Mueller.
Allan graduated from McBride High School in
St. Louis, Missouri, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from St. Mary's University in
San Antonio, Texas. He served for three years (1965–1969) in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Captain, and was assigned to duty for 13 months as a combat engineer (2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines) during the Vietnam War.
He met the love of his life, Carol Coleman, in St. Louis, MO, and they married at St. Louis University in 1973. They celebrated 50 years together, building a family, finding professional successes, and traveling across the country and overseas-all while never missing one of their kids' or grandkids' activities.
Al is survived by his wife, Carol, and his four children: Lucas (Stephanee) Mueller of Jefferson City, Abbie Mueller of Jefferson City, John Ryan (Elizabeth) Mueller of
Denver, Colorado, and Mark (Kara) Mueller of
Denver, Colorado; his eight grandchildren: Baylie and Philip Bellin, Caleb and Lela Mueller, Cora and Ruthie Mueller, and Claire and Maya Mueller and one sister: Mary (Craig) Sande of
Reno, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Robert Mueller (Sheila Mueller), one granddaughter: Penelope Mueller, his mother/father-in-law: Rosemary and Hoffman Coleman, and his nephew Jackson Coleman.
Mueller grew up in North St. Louis and his late father, A. "Barney" Mueller, was a longtime St. Louis Alderman. As a lifelong Democrat, Al followed in his father's footsteps and made a lasting impact in his community through his extensive political career and public service contributions. He was a natural leader and storyteller and-with his many passions, outgoing personality, and strong convictions-his energy was often unmatched. People were drawn to him and he was drawn to people. He loved to help and be with others.
His notable career highlights include six years as Missouri State Representative (1970–1976), six years as State Senator (1977–1983), 13 years as Public Service Commissioner (1983–1996, including a three-year stint as Chairman), and 12 years as Cole County Treasurer (1997–2008).
His involvements and accomplishments include the KLIK News Talk Sunday Morning Roundtable, Governor Blair Award Recipient, Jefferson City Independent News Editor and Chief, Cole County DNC Treasurer, Consumer Protection Committee Chairman (House), and Energy Conservation Committee Chairman (Senate).
Al was also a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the local Marine Corp League, the JC Chamber of Commerce, the Helias Booster Club, and the JC High School Booster Club.
He loved talking and tinkering. There was no problem too big and no person too small he wouldn't strike up a conversation with. One of his greatest passions in life was the desire to understand the interworking of any person, project, situation, or mechanism. He loved his PBS programming, often with one of his beloved pets at his side. He was unapologetically passionate about clean tap water and, at times, an aggravatingly fierce advocate for public transportation.
Wherever Al went, he was notorious for collecting and leaving behind a paper trail of newspapers, flyers, brochures, Al Mueller Re-election stickers, and maps from places like state welcome centers, history museums, and home repair outlets. And not just because those were free-he had a zest for life and a thirst for knowledge that never quit. Though his paper trail has ended, he leaves behind a lasting legacy of treasured memories, friendships, and Al Mueller stories that will live on forever. We'd love to hear your Al story at his service and celebration of life reception.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. The celebration of life reception for Al's family and friends will be held at 324 E. Capitol following the burial ceremony.
