Alan Lee Ellertson, a beloved father, son, and brother, was born on June 20th, 1967 in Jackson, MN to his parents Carol Ellertson and Bernie Sampson. Alan suddenly passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 58, in Des Moines, Iowa. Alan's life was defined by his adventurous spirit, quick wit, and unwavering dedication, both to his country and his passions.Alan graduated from Ames High School in June 1985. He began secondary education in Albert Lea, but he was destined for a different life, serving his country in the United States Air Force.Alan proudly served his country, enlisting in the United States Air Force in March 1986. He completed his basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. His service at RAF Lakenheath, England, where he met the mother of his children, Tracy, where they welcomed their daughter Alicia in July 1988. This was followed by a move to Maine where they welcomed their son, Adam, in October 1990. This was followed by posts in the Azores, Nebraska, and ultimately Oklahoma. During his service he served as flight engineer during the First Gulf War in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After an honorable discharge in May 1998, Alan transitioned his passion for aviation into a successful civilian career as a pilot and flight instructor, sharing his expertise and love for the skies with countless others. In the early 2000s, he decided to ground himself and proceed into his final chapter.Alan cherished this time fishing, travelling, aspiring to be a chef, loving all kinds of food, especially a good prime rib. He also developed a love for photography and blogging with his long term project, The Pendulum Swung Project. He loved spending family vacations away fishing at various lakes in Minnesota and Iowa. He was also an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and Minnesota Vikings.Alan is survived by his two loving children, Adam & Alicia; his mother, Carol. his siblings, Annette(Tom), Mike( Blanca), and April; adopted brother Royce(Jenny) and half brothers Steve & Eric; his Godmother and Aunt Mary James. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lee and Alice James, his father, Bernie, and his nephews, Braydon and Griffin.
