Sarasota - Alan J. Schottenstein, 92, passed away peacefully on July 23rd, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Lois Schottenstein; his daughters, Tamara Shepard and Cara DeFoor; his stepdaughter, Beth Elise Hawk; his stepson, Bernard Machlovitch; his sons-in-law, James Shepard, Joe DeFoor, and Dennis Hawk; his daughter-in-law, Codi Machlovitch; and his grandchildren, Margaux, Max, Alana, Luke, Sydney, Roman, Easton and Emery. Born in Indianapolis, Alan grew up in Columbus Ohio. A veteran of the Korean War, Alan graduated with B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Ohio State. In the business world, he was a successful entrepreneur who imported bicycles and accessories from around the globe. In the art world, he opened the Gloria Cortella Gallery in New York City. He pursued his passions as an avid musician, athlete, art collector and patron of the arts. His greatest achievement is living his life with kindness and integrity. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and friend until his passing. He will be sorely missed. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, July 27th, at 2:00 p.m., at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, Florida.
