Sorry to hear you are gone, Al. I was a young dumb kid in the USAF when we met at Mather AFB. You, Bill Marquis and Mike Perot had shipped in to Mather to complete your tour of duty before separation. You wanted to go camping in the Sierra Nevada and we gathered our stuff and drove into the mountains to camp, goof off and party a bit. Poncho, Rosey (Bob Roslaniec?) Al, Bill, Jim Ball and myself had some fun and I still have the pics!. We all crashed in the big goofy tent that we spent HOURS setting up..hahaha....then we crashed....to this day, when I think of that adventure I still cringe and am amazed that we didn't get attacked and eaten by a bear; which we found out , AFTER, were in the area....lol...sounds like you had a good life and a great family. I'm gonna watch the movie The Edge....and thank God again we didn't find a bear.....

My darling brother,
I miss you so much I think about the many things that I should have said to you that can no longer be said. I pray that God has welcomed you with open arms and that you were reunited with Mom and Dad I know that I will see you again and we will have a wonderful reunion but New Years eve just seems hollow without you near. Rest peacefully, until we meet again. Love you always.

Dear Al,
Words cannot describe how much I miss you. Every day. Every hour. Someday, you and I will be together again. Rest peacefully until then - because when I get there it'll be party time.

When I was around 6 years old, Al employed me to work on his two paper routes. We delivered the Washington Post to most houses in the neighborhood - and neighborhood around the corner. This task involved getting home from school every afternoon and walking to the corner to find a huge stack of papers. We had a huge English pram (and no wagon) and we would load up all the papers to begin our journey. Rain or shine, cold or hot, you could count on us. Al would push the pram and I would grab papers and run from one side of the street, back and forth putting papers on front steps or inside glass doors. People often ask me why I had to do the running and Al the pushing. It was simple. I was neither tall enough to reach the handle of the pram, nor strong enough to push it. Sunday morning deliveries were by far the worst. We would find two stacks of papers. The normal stack of heavy papers and the 'inserts' of advertisements or flyers from businesses. We would just the plastic ties around each bundle, then sit on the side walk (rain or shine, snow, sleet, heat) and insert the ad section into each paper. Saturday afternoons, since there was no deliveries to be made, were spent going door to door collection money. The deliver trucks would pick them up from us on Mondays. If someone didn't pay or had a complaint, it was left to us to resolve. That was the tough part but Al always handled it well. I didn't care about getting my share of the profits. Al would walk me down the street to the store and buy me a bit of candy - and I would just be happy to be a part of the process. None of my sisters got the privilege or the fun of being Al's right hand man. That was all I really needed.

I remember sitting in a one room schoolhouse with Al and Mel. A tiny wooden building down a dirt road from our house. Our teacher was Mrs. Nicerbauker. None of us every forgot her. I was in first grade and Al in third. We lived in Winooski, Vermont at the time and our dad worked at the Burlington Airport for Northeast Airlines. At lunch time we would sit under a tree outside and laugh. Al was always great company. Over the years we talked about those sunny days with fondness and with love.

I will always remember his smile and his laugh. I've been enjoying it for 67 years. He was the reason that I got up happy every day as a child. Waiting to see what adventure he would think up and take me on. We had a sometimes difficult childhood but I always sought and found refuge in my brothers love. I will always miss him and look forward to seeing him again someday.
