I became a Clip Joint customer shortly before Al bought the place. My folks loved him immediately and I've stayed for life. Our kids both received their 1st cuts from Al hymnself. In the pic here, our youngest, at his first cut doing very well with with Albert's gentle and sure touch. (Oct 5, 2005)

I started getting my hair cut at the Clip Joint before Albert was there. Billy Harner was the owner at that time. I was attending MHS and met Al one day on my way to Chorus. From then on my only place to get my hair cut was @ Al's. I used to hang out with him during lunch, study hall and any other time I had a break. Once I graduated I always kept up our relationship until I moved out of state in 1997. So as you can see we knew each other for over 30 years. When I did come back to Jersey ( which was about every 3 months or so) I always made it a habit of stopping by and seeing him. He would alway's say " hop on up here and let me give you a trim".
However, he would never let me pay him. I remember a couple of New Years Eve parties we had when he was living in the Shade. Great times of fun, laughter, and fellowship. The last 4 years I haven't had a real need to come home so I haven't been there. I was on Facebook this morning and decided to look him up. I wasn't expecting to see that my FRIEND and Barber had passed away. It brought tears to my eyes and a heavy heart. It's difficult writing this because he was a true brother of mine and I am so sorry for not keeping in touch with him. I will never forget the great times we had but more importantly "AL" and his alway's joyful smile and encouragement that he not only showed me but to all who ever walked through the door at The Clip Joint. You, my brother "AL" I will surely miss.
Never to be forgotten!!!!!!

I knew Al since high school. He was my only barber in Jersey. When I moved to Arkansas and came back for a visit I would bring him some Coors ( before it was legal east of Oklahoma ) and he would insist on fixing my hair. When I moved back to Jersey, he gave my son his first haircut. I would come in 3 or 4 times a year and he would always say that it must be a holiday. I've been in and out of hospitals and rehabs for the last few years and am confined to a wheelchair and never got to see him. I miss him

Al first cut my hair in 1968. He was my only barber save for my time away at college, and the rare down time. It was maybe my third haircut, and he took over what he renamed The Clip Joint. As kids, he would crack us up with his threat of giving us 'The Baldy' using his giant 3ft plastic scissors. His shop was the heartbeat of Merchantville. He knew everyone and everyone knew and loved him. If a homeless guy stopped by, they were guaranteed a soft pretzel. Just within the last year I saw him send one of the girls out to cut the hair of one who wouldn't come inside, so he got his cut in a chair on the sidewalk. One thing needs mentioning.. He had such facility with a pair of barbers' shears, he made every other barber I ever went to seem ham fisted. Anyone who worked for him was well advised to take his advice. The dude knew his stuff. I don't expect that my best cut ever is in my future. How could it be? He was The Best.
I was lucky to call him my friend, and immensely flattered that he did the same. Miss him so much already...

I knew Al when I was about 14 and he was a young father and husband in Maple Shade. I thought he was so cool ! I was on my 3rd father at that point and I remember thinking, I wish I had a dad so cool. He had a Yellow 70 Mustang, then with van craze of the 70's he had a cool shag rugged out Ford Econoline van all customized out. When I left Jersey in 87 I got 1 last hair cut by Al, when I came back to Jersey in 2004 I went straight to The Clip Joint for a hair cut. I'm 54 now and Al still cut my hair. That's the kind of guy he was, once you knew him you couldn't help but to continue to know him. Al, I'll miss our talks as I sat in the chair at The Clip Joint.

Your smiling face, your happy go lucky attitude is what made everyone love you. Clip Joint is a landmark and so are you. Al...you will be greatly missed.Joy, Kyle and Khristian Bowman
