Alberta Auretta. Smith, 97, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, in Walnut Hills Retirement Center after a period of declining health.
Alberta was born in New Waterford, Ohio on November 23, 1927, to the late Aura and Hazel (Oberholtzer) Maple.
She graduated from New Waterford High School in 1945. On March 25, 1953, she married Richard C. Smith and together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage before his passing in December of 2014.
She was employed by Marsh Industries for over 23 years. Alberta and Richard were also owner and operator of Jaffee’s Shoe Salon, and co-owners of Cooper-Smith Shoes.
In her spare time, Alberta was a volunteer with Hospice and an active member of Faith Christian Church. She was involved with the Ladies Bible Study and also helped in the church office for many years. She also enjoyed traveling, bird watching, and spending time with her family. Alberta was also an avid fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Guardians.
Alberta is survived by her three daughters, Sheryl (Sherman) Bucher of New Philadelphia, Karen Smith Maize of Dover, and Sandra Smith Newbold of New Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Gretchen (Robbie) Pearce, Sherman David (Erin) Bucher, Tyler Newbold, Bryce Newbold, and Amber Maize; eight great-grandchildren, Amelia, Genevieve, Hattie Mae, Jackson, Macy, Landon, Lexi, and Bella; a great-great- granddaughter, Annaliese, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Phyllis (Russell) McQuiston, Dorothy (George) Rupert, Edgar (Mary Ann) Maple, and Paul (Patricia) Maple.
In keeping with Alberta’s wishes cremation care has been entrusted to Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia. An inurnment in the Ragersville Cemetery will take place at a later date.
