Alex Jon Butterfield, age 31, passed away unexpectedly June 13, 2023 in Provo, Utah due to complications associated with an illness. Alex was born July 30, 1991 in Salt Lake City, Utah to his parents, Jon and Barbara Butterfield. Alex was born with complicated health issues which persisted throughout his life. Despite these challenges, Alex refused to allow anything to define his abilities or limit his accomplishments.
Alex was raised primarily in
South Jordan, Utah and graduated from Bingham High School. In 2011, Alex served as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Seattle, Washington mission. He was honorably released after nine months due to medical issues.
Alex met the love of his life, Natalie Rose Marsh, and celebrated the happiest day of his life, September 28, 2018, when they were married and sealed in the Payson LDS temple. Natalie completed Alex and provided him with love and companionship. Together, they enjoyed traveling and embarked on several cruises to warm, sunny destinations.
From a very early age, Alex was determined to have a career in law enforcement simply because he wanted to help people. He became licensed and worked as an Unarmed Private Security Officer. He attended Salt Lake Community College and earned an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 2017. When faced with the reality that his physical limitations prevented a career in law enforcement, Alex immediately shifted his focus to social work. He attended Utah Valley University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 2020 and earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Utah in 2022. At the time of his passing, Alex was employed as a therapist working with adolescent male youth. He was passionate about his work. He loved his clients unconditionally and fiercely advocated for them. He truly made a difference in their lives.
Alex was small in stature but a giant of a man. Alex was intensely shy in social situations. He was a kind, gentle and pure soul who wanted to leave the world a better place. Alex could also be intensely stubborn. He had the heart of a lion and refused to back down from a challenge. His fearlessness was instilled at a young age by an incredible mother, who repeatedly taught Alex that he could accomplish anything he set his mind to through hard work and dedication. While nothing came easy for Alex in this life, he just worked harder and became more determined. His next big goal was to purchase a home so he started a new business, Big Al's Detailing, and worked evenings and weekends for the past several several months with pride and dedication.
Alex, affectionally known as Al-Gal, was raised with an incredible group of friends who treated him like a brother and provided him with the love, support, acceptance and inclusion when he needed it the most and deserved it the least. We will be forever grateful for the difference they made in his life.
Alex loved music, especially country music, and often walked the neighborhood to blow off steam accompanied by his Boston terrier, Lulu, who he loved immeasurably. Alex loved the Utah Jazz, playing X-box, and especially loved good food! He treasured time with friends and family. Lake Powell trips with Al-Gal were filled with 35 mph epic tube rides and spills that would leave most people broken. There are so, so many funny stories and memories of Alex that we will treasure forever!
Above all else, his parents are intensely proud of the man Alex became, for the life he lived, all that he accomplished and the lives that he touched. While his passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts and in our family, we are comforted with the knowledge that his work here was done. He is now whole and at peace. We love you Al-Gal!
Alex is survived by his wife, Natalie; his parents, Jon & Barbara Butterfield; sister, Ashley (Jordan) Roberts and their children Sarin, Nora and Nixon; sister, Brinley (Brecken) Mills; and brother, Cole Butterfield. Alex was preceded in death by his grandfather, Earl S. Butterfield; grandmother, Elaine B. Ervin; grandfather, George E. Garlock and grandmother, Cynthia A. Garlock.
